Just learned:

Potato chips were actually invented in New York in 1853, when railroad magnate Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt complained that his potatoes were cut too thick and sent them back to the kitchen at a fashionable resort in Saratoga Springs. To spite his haughty guest, Chef George Crum sliced some potatoes paper-thin, fried them in hot oil, salted and served them, and the "Saratoga Crunch Chips" became a hit.

Just to make sure are we talking the same type of chips? What you guys call chips like in fish and chips, we call fries. Our chips I believe are called crisps over there?
Anyway, it may have been an instant of co-invention given there wasn't such great communication available. But 1853 beats 1860 :P

^^ I didn't say I ate them! but I have used their cans to make enhanced WiFi antennas

I live in an area where two of the best "chips" are made, Utz, and Herr's.

These two brands were actually mentioned in that article from which I quoted the OP.

LOL - you Brits.
Anyway, I fail to see the diff between YOUR chips and YOUR fries - to us, they are both fries...

And does this mean that YOUR Dundee chips were actually fries in our lingo and thus, not chips/crisps?

French-American mutt fries cant even look at the english chip for how superior it is.

Theres nothing like a big fat salty vingeray ketchupy english chip coulpled with a tasty cod and a savaloy sausage. Nothing. Except Kebabs, they are pretty nect (local "black" slang i picked up today, had to get it in a post somewhere)
