Well, Pirellis are weaker, in terms of compound, but, I still think there will be a lot of 3 stops strategies!

3 stopper will standard - which, BTW, is exactly what Pirelli had targeted. They said they wanted to have primes for each circuit that did between 100-150Klms per set. That = 3 stops.

no, that's 2 stops, i.e., 3 sets @ 100km = 300km = race distance.
But yeah, there will be even 4 stops at some circuits according to Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery with an average of 3 stops.

The Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA) met in Barcelona this week to discuss concerns that have arisen during testing, with Pirelli's wet tyres highlighted as an issue.

The drivers have been quick to criticise the new Pirelli slicks, saying that the rate of degradation is too high. The concerns they voiced this week, however, refer to the wet tyre, with Felipe Massa claiming that the current offering could lead to the weather cancelling races.

"Most drivers agree that we have to improve the grip" Massa told El Mundo. "Because if we have a grand prix like last year in Korea, it would be difficult to do the race."

If a race is cancelled because pirellis wet tyres aren't capable in extreme wet conditions i will be totally pissed off. :banghead:

No, it is 3 stops, you have to run both tyres options and primes at least once.

I keep saying 4 stops is really never going to be contemplated or planned. That is because they don't have enough tyres to run a 4 stop strategy. Now, if some idiot driver really does completely ruin his tyres then, I guess they could come in and do a 4th stop, but what will they put on? A set of worn options tyres? That have already given up all their good laps, and are good for 5 laps? Then what, put on a set of intermediates or wets to get home? Any team or driver that does a 4 stopped will have had some incredibly bad luck or will have driven like a moron.

It's still gonna be 2 stops in many cases: the first 10-14 laps on the options used in q3, the rest of the distance on two sets of prime.

Some idiot driver? Hm, I could think of a few :hehe::twisted:

10-14 race laps on a set of Pirelli option-tyres that have run through one qualifying session? You should have a look at the number of laps people are getting out of primes, forget options. There are possibly two teams with great grip that, maybe, on a few circuits, might be able to contemplate 2 stops, but, the 3 will be standard.

Nah, they start on the options of the last stint of q3, so those have potentially just 3 laps under their belt, one of the laps would be the in-lap, carefully 'curing' the tires to prep for the race. They'll get 10 laps out of those.

Well, not too long to find out if your right about having so many 2 stoppers. Personally I can't see it except as a possibility for the top teams and only on suitable tracks. Melb is traditionally easy on tyres so that should tell us a lot.

BTW, most option tyre runs at Barcelona are 5-6 laps (a few up to 8 ) counting in/out laps. Can I get you a job as chief strategist for RB please? :)

Also, I'd suspect the best chance of pulling off a 2 stop strategy would be to start on primes, and save your options for the last stint so you run them when the track is most rubbered in - which could get you a few more laps out of the softer tyre.

Well, Pirelli claim that the temp was not right during testing, i.e., too cold and that at the race weekend it'll be different. What do i know. Yes, soon we'll find out how all this plays out - anybody else ready for the first race? :drink:

Off for a run, then have a few mates over for quite a few of these :drink: with a BBQ later. You're all welcome to join, Bud has a fair idea where I am.

id love to go but ill be in Melbourne :P

My missus breathed a sign of relief - every time a new mate visits, it means 2 or 3 sunrise "nights-out", which, thankfully I usually have little to no memory of

What a stroke of luck for the 4 teams practicing today. A day of steady rain. So it seems that only Ferrari, McLaren, Williams and Mercedes will get a chance to build so significant data on wet weather performance, setup and, critically tyres.

Ferrari will end up with the most miles in the wet as well as the dry.

Here's the weather forecast for today. It looks like steady rain so these four teams will be able to work significant programs in the wet.
Hope it rains for the Melb race :-)

Let's just hope that Massa crashes on rainy weather, as he usually does... :hehe:
