Drag increases with the square of the velocity. 110 is 8.3% slower than 120, therefore drag would decrease 16.7%.

KM/H is about half of what MPH is so no need to feel all Speed Racer.

1mph is 0.62km/h, so it's more like 3/5th the speed ;) but of course that exponential; 60mph is 96km/h, so there is big difference.

Alonso wouldn't like it here in the US then as half the time the speed limits on highways is 60 - 65mph...

1mph is 1.61km/h but yes, 60mph=96km/h though linear not exponential, that would be really wierd.

My bad; it seems that my understanding of exponential expression is incorrect; that'll teach me to skip mathematics classes.

I was trying to express that it may not seem like a big difference between 1mph and 1km/h, but when multiplied by 60; the difference is significant!

And now you're getting into relativity.

It's strange, I have no idea what my weight is in kg, or what my height is in cm, when I'm driving all speeds are mph, my beer is in pints (though not when driving) and my tobacco and other stuff are in ounces. Yet at work I only ever use metric and there's absolutely no way I could do any calcs in imperial measurement.

In metric, say I get paid $45 per sq metre, what I get paid for 1.2m by 0.355m is 1.2 X .355 X 45, dead easy

now say I get paid $5 per sq foot, what do I get paid for 4'7" by 1'2" and 3/16 ?

Move to North Dakota... no speed limits on 3/4 of the state roads! LOL

Sounds good to me! Don't some highways in America have a limit of 50 mph?

It varies wildly from state to state and city to city.

I live in council bluffs ia, but drive to work in omaha ne. I 80 has a speed limit of 60 MPH. but if you start to head towards lincoln it goes to 75. However going into iowa it drops to 55, then as you leave council bluffs to go say south towards missouri it goes to 60 -> 65 -> and then once it gets to missouri it goes to 75, and even up to 80 on parts of I70.

I don't really care that much, police forces are so under staffed anyway, so unless they go to speed cameras (which I would promise they would get vandalized to all oblivion) people don't really follow the limits. They don't go crazy over them like 65 limit people might go 75 but nothing like going 110 + on a 60 or some crap.

Over all, I wish they would just make the lanes have limits. The outer lane in America should be a standard of 75 + on normal interstates.

Ah yer I forgot the states could allocate their own speed limits. 55 is slow, stupid slow!

I miss the UK speed limits; you know where you stand; highways/motorways @ 70mph unless otherwise indicated (usually for roadworks etc); built up areas in the city/town @ 30mph.

Most of the north east has 65 as the limit, but I set my cruise control at 75 and can blow past a state trooper with a radar gun without a fear of being tagged. But one mph over that and you're asking for it.

In the densely populated states there's so much traffic anyway that you often wish you could sustain 55.

How long you been in the US for? It's a joke here now, average speed cameras seem to be utterly rampant and most of the motorways i drive on usually have variable speed limits activated! Also every time you go on the motorway for a significant distance you can expect to have to stop or slow for traffic at least once... :irked:

and of course our beautifully crafted country roads, especially when the national speed limit sign pops up just before you hit it!

Wait, the article says the reasoning is to reduce fuel consumption, does the government buy all fuel collectively in Spain and distribute it to people, or do people buy it privately? Because I don't see why the government are using this is a method to reduce fuel consumption, supply and demand will control the prices, subsidise alternative means of transport to encourage people to use them, or is emissions the problem?

Hmmm, you won't be missing the state of the roads though, they're falling apart, full of holes, roadworks everywhere, speedbumps and other completely ridiculous 'traffic calming' measures everywhere. You can't get anywhere near the limit most of the time.

I thought that was Montana? Has that changed? I remember racing in Montana with no speed limit whatsoever, back in the 90's.

Engines use considerably less fuel at 55mph compared to 65mph and compared to 75mph the difference is even more dramatic. It just is.
