So the headline on one of my web news standards is Military Takes Key Parts of Bahrain

I think our GP is in jeopardy; Alternatives are certainly needed ASAP.

WAY too late for an alternative to be organised i reckon. If we're lucky (that is if you want an extra race no matter how boring it is, and GP comes before major world events :hehe: ) this will blow over before GP time, if not, im pretty sure F1 will just start two weeks later then planned. Which i am absolutely dreading because the new season couldnt start soon a-friggin' nough.

There's no blowing this over me thinks. Even if they're able to "control" it, they are specifically targeting the GP because of its additional global audience. I also think the usual garden variety celubutants that follow the circuit will not be in attendance and you know you can't have a GP without celebrities. Additionally it's not just the GP but the week before of testing... so even if it's canceled or postponed, they'll have to move the testing session elsewhere.

:yikes: * slaps WB cleanly round the face for assuming such a possibility*

Which is why I posted my comment and why it's not too far fetched to expect an alternative GP that weekend. How about Paul Ricard? It's been a while since the last GP there. Perfect for testing with all its possible configurations and a decent race track as well.

Yeah but are we talking about the GP or testing, you cant really conjure up a GP out of nowhere, its actually a pretty easy option to just cancel it and start at australia. The most likely option to be taken too. We said the same about Korea, but they managed to get the track decent. What i mean is, assuming some random circuit gets a phone call today, could they host a GP on March the 13th!, tall order.

I know what you mean, but Paul Ricard, e.g., is always ready or should be as the famous test track that it is. So, a week of testing should be easy to organize. Then come race weekend, they simply stay there and have a go with as many visitors as may show up (it'll probably still beat the turnout at Shanghai last year :P ) and the rest of the money would have to come from Bernie and/or the teams who would account it as test session.

Paul Ricard is in Le Castellet, near Marseille - the French must be starved for F1 action by now so I wouldn't be surprised if they'd turn out in droves in case a race gets staged there.

I hope is is postponed and not replaced. I want the Australian Grand Prix to be the first race again. The OZ GP just isnt the same if its not the first gp. I love watching the practice sessions and having no idea who is going to get pole position.

As much as I'd like to see a GP... SOMEWHERE, I don't think it's going to happen, there's just so much logistical stuff that needs to shipped, much of which goes by ship, so it's not like they can that easily redirect equipment around, unless the take redirect whatever they're currently packing up to get to Australia in late March and send that to the alternate location, and divert the current shipments to Bahrain to Australia.

Logistically not pretty, not cheap and the preferred method here would be to go ahead as planned, but given the unrest if it's not completely quashed well before the practice week, I'm thinking we're waiting till Australia for our season opener.

Agree with this. 0% chance of a 'substitute' GP. Worst case (and most likely) scenario is the GP scrapped and we only have 19 races this season.

FOTA had a lunch meeting at Barcelona today and it looks like they have officially moved the Bahrain test to Barcelona.

Here is the original link at the motor21 web site run through a web page translation bot.

Also, I think the move to Abu Dahbi is a distinct possibility. A lot of sponsors and contracts are contingent on 20 races, so lots of contracts and agreements would be adversely effected if they just cancelled. AD is close enough to organise the logistics. It would be difficult but possible.
