Preferential treatment in Alonso's case means not letting his team mate beat him. Being the man the team puts their efforts behind. Alonso is happy in this situation.

I don't think a clause of 'not letting his teammate beat him' is even writeable in a contract. There's no way to guarantee this.

Being the man the team puts the effort behind is possible, and its what the other teams do. But i'm sure the team demands something in exchange for this....... so its not a free ride to the top podium. And i'm sure this demand is beneficial to the team (or at least they think it is).

Its' something i feel really strongly about. But I can see your point of view. The fact that you believe one driver can be selected as the prime racer for that team and everyone has to help that driver. I can see it but i dont like it or think its fair.
Why isnt it going to be in a teams interest? It happened last year when it was banned so why should it not happen this year when its legal?

I did post previously about the generational divide, which WB has also acknowledged. He also raises the cultural issue as well, which I agree is relevant.

I think a large part of the issue lies in our perceptions of the hierarchy that exists within the team. The hierarchy I refer to consists of the team, driver A and driver B. Ferrari, Massa and Alonso. I see that structure as being:-
The team goal is not to promote a particular driver, but to ensure winning, this is primary and is above either driver.

I think your view is like this:-
Where the team promotes Alonso always

I guess I would ask you this question, if Alonso's or his car had a problem at a race and Felipe was closing in on him as well as Vettel. And if on the current lap times both Felipe and Vettel would catch Nando, do you think Ferrari as a team would take the risk and tell Felipe to hold position (and risk getting either one or both cars passed or perhaps even being penalized for blocking) or do you think they would order Felipe past and take the guaranteed win?

I know they would tell Felipe to pass and it would be done in a heartbeat. No hesitation.

Spanky this is pretty damned impressive! I love it! To RC's point and to other's point, I guess there's a nagging question as to why it always seems to go towards Alonso and not against him. Which is a completely separate thread! But I do say that I completely understand your argument even though I fall on the other side of the fence.

Maybe if the scenario you describe comes to fruition it will change a lot of minds, or at least vindicate what you've been saying. Until then, I think the team order threads will continue to grow.

Firstly even if it was true, even if you catch someone doesnt mean you're guaranteed a pass!!!!! Petrov-Alonso Kubi-Lewis???

Dont fight it so hard!!! I just recall too many Alonso fist pumpings when he cant pass teammates and rivals alike!!! Massa was a p**** and let him by,he will be the next Rubens at ferrari!!

My picture would not be like either of yours. It would be like this

Ferrari
Alonso
Massa
Sorry, cant do pictures like yours.

In your scenario I think they would sacrifice Massa in heartbeat if they thought it could allow Alonso to limp to the finnish. If Alonso was sticken beyond all hope, then yes, they'd let Massa past.

The top three teams Red Bull,McLaren and Alonso all have drivers capable of WDC so it'd be a shame if T/O are used!!

I just hope Felipe can return to his '08 form, and perhaps what we saw a glimmer of in Melbourne last year (especially that start :) ). For me that would put a lot of statements here into perspective. And of course would greatly enhance the teams chances of Championships.

he was pretty good in 2008 (i mean he was wdc until about 2 corners from the end), but i think that happend because he didnt really have any pressure from raikkonen and the support of the team, i think thats what he needs more now than anything and the luck+results too

My view is that the rule is self policing. I already explained in terms of sponsors and fans.

But also, well what Button actually said, you make the second driver demotivated.

Normally having two drivers pushing each other and fighting it out, is pretty good for the team, in certain circumstances (clearest when one driver is out of the WDC mathematically) the team judges it better to favour one driver.
