Lucas di Grassi on the new wing:-
" It will be good for overtaking obviously, but besides the aerodynamic performance there is another consequence. You can use the adjustable win g in qualifying,so the car will be set up to hit the limiter in seventh gear at the end of the fastest sraight. that means when you come up behind a car in the race, you wont just bounce of the limiter and can gain a speed advantae when the wings open. So that will engineer in more advantage from the tow, as the cars with closed slots won't be topping out without compromising their qualifying. Alos how you use the wing in qualifying will make some difference, even if its only a few hundredths of a second on the staights, because of a slight difference in when you activate it. I'm against generating artificial overtaking. A pass should be like a goal i football, not a score in basketball, and shoul be a big reward for the driver"

The wing can be used without restriction in practice and qualifying.

Written enough on this, but have to say again that I completely agree with RC on this.

That is my entire point about this ridiculous 'rule'. The only thing I'm not looking forward to in 2011.

100% agree, and what's more, I hope they realize how stupid this rule is before it gets a chance to ruin races and they scrap it before the actual season starts.

As much as everyone doesn't seem to like the rule, I have to admit I'm getting a kick out of looking at the different implementation of the movable wing. I just don't know if they'll scrap it before the beginning of the season, how much money would have been thrown away... I'm sure the teams would like some recompense for their troubles because of it.

I think the only thing the FIA may give in on is not making it a restricted use, and allowing all cars to use it, even the one in front... which defeats the purpose of the idea in the first place. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

i think it deserves a chance, i mean look at the start of last season, it was dubbed ''borerhain'' then after that, every race had drama and action of some description

Gimmicks never work. All the best advancements in Formula One have come from individual teams looking to one-up the competition. Motorsport Gimmicks are the stuff of lower Formulae and failed series like A1GP*.

*Please note, I consider the mandatory pit stop a gimmick too.

Red Bull has built a global empire on a "gimmick" so I say some gimmicks do work. :D

...And what gimmick would that be? Putting almost lethal doses of Sugar and Caffeine in their beverages? That's not a gimmick, it's a scheme.

Maybe WB is talking about their use of 'experiential' marketing...but even that's more of a marketing strategy, not a gimmick.

Yeap, that the exact gimmick I'm talkin' bout. i got the following from the internet, so you know it can't be wrong.

In marketing language, a gimmick is a quirky feature that distinguishes a product or service without adding any obvious function or value. Thus, a gimmick sells solely on the basis of distinctiveness and may not appeal to the more savvy or shrewd customer.

Overloading the drinks with sugar and caffeine does add an obvious function though, it makes you feel more awake when you drink them.

Rubens Barrichello has hit out at the workload drivers are forced to cope with as KERS and adjustable rear wings – two components which can only be operated manually by the driver, via his steering wheel – are both present in Formula 1 this year. Driving the brand-new Williams FW33 in Valencia on Tuesday but with an interim livery, Barrichello was pleased with his general performance but was noticeably vocal when expressing his opinions over the new features.

At present, Barrichello fears for drivers’ safety as a direct result of looking down for steering wheel buttons

“It was positive today,” he began to explain to GPUpdate.net. “The only negative is that we cannot just concentrate on driving, there’s too many buttons. There’s just far too many things to do, it’s just not enjoyable.

“You’re pressing it, changing a gear, pressing it again, changing a gear, then the engineer comes on (the pit radio) and says, ‘Could you press it a little bit earlier?’…

“I hope it improves the show by 100 percent because, if it doesn’t, it’s just not making any sense.”

This is a joke!! From here on in I advise the teams to start hiring women for drivers, you need people who are heavy in multitasking to drive these damn cars!!

Or hire 13 year old drivers and make the steering wheel an xBox controller.

No offense Rubens, but it's too extra Buttons. Man the f**k up, there's bigger problems with these ideas.

Rubens is really living up to his "grumpy old man" of F1 reputation
