Is this the lotus racing under the malaysian flag with no heritage and stealing from past glories of the REAL team Lotus? :hurl:

What do you mean by the REAL team Lotus? It is confusing but the ones that Renault took the name from have never built racing cars, there's no heritage there. The racing car part of Lotus (that was always seperate from the road car) is the part that the name came from that VJ's team race with.

I think

I'm confused... which Team Lotus is this about? Tony Lotus or Renault Lotus?

Team Lotus is the only Lotus, the other team is Renault.

Ok, and under which name was Renault trying to compete? Group Lotus Renault or something like that?

I can't wait to see a definitive list of entry names for 2011. And I thought "BMW Sauber Ferrari" was bad, this is just crazy :S

Renault GP's official long name is "Lotus Renault GP", but the word "Lotus" is the Title Sponsor and is not part of the team name.

Team Lotus = Team Lotus. 1Malaysia Racing F1 acquired the name and the heritage. Team Lotus is Team Lotus is Team Lotus.

Posts like this really do highlight your ignorance of F1, no matter how many years you've supposedly been 'following' it.

How? They are not the real Team Lotus, They are just a bunch of malaysian investers who have bought the heritage of the real Team Lotus. I would see it as a scar on the history of the original team if this imposter adds points to its tally.

At least the Lotus Group Renault are starting from fresh as a branch from the Lotus group much like the original Team lotus did but they are trying to keep the legasy and history of the original team as it is. The chapman family even back this side. If any team had the RIGHT to be called Lotus it would be the team back by the company that is Lotus.

I would of been fine with the Lotus Racing team as they were starting something fresh and new that was apart from the Historic Lotus team. They also had the backing of the Lotus group to do so but If they try and disrupt the Team Lotus history I dont blame Group Lotus for being angry. :irked:

I see no such scar. They are going under the theme of continuing/reviving the legacy and haven't proposed anything which is deragotary to the old Lotus team.

And anyway, this is the team which took the efforts to get it started in F1 and establish themselves. However, the politics had to intervene at some point and the sticker makers decided that they want to get involved as well and eliminate the guys who already had the ball rolling. Mark my words, if Lotus racing never happened, Renault will NOT have Lotus Group as their sponsor today, or ever. Of course, it's not something which I can prove.

This reeks of politics (and not the fake 'love' that Group Lotus claims), and as I reside in Malaysia I'm aware of the reasons behind this though will not venture into it as it's against forum rules.

I would say there were simply trying to stand on the shoulders of giants, but in this case it's more like standing on the shoulders of dwarfs.

Goddamned spellcheck is so stupid. As long as it's a word it leaves you up the creek without a poodle.

So they're in court right now to decide whether or not the matter will be resolved at a later date... in court. WTF? Farcical...

Yeah sadly, if one side or the other can prove probable cause for an extension more often than none they will get their extension.

Update on this:

ESPNF1:
The dispute over the Lotus name in Formula One has taken another turn as Team Lotus has lost the support of the name's previous owner David Hunt.

Hunt sold the 'Team Lotus' name to Tony Fernandes but The Telegraph reports that he is now preparing to sue the Malaysian, alleging that Fernandes has yet to pay for the name. With the court battle with Group Lotus set to resume today, the report says that Hunt is "refusing to assist Team Lotus in court", and sees "potentially some serious holes" in Fernandes' case.

"He's apparently changed his mind at the eleventh hour," Hunt said. "He's trying to renegotiate by offering new terms which are, frankly, ludicrous."

Fernandes had bought the name to Team Lotus when relations with Proton deteriorated, having previously had the backing of Group Lotus. When Proton bought in to the Renault team, however, it wanted the name back in order to call it Lotus-Renault GP.

An initial hearing took place towards the end of January, but both sides are back in court today to attempt to settle all claims. The complexities of the case mean a final decision could take some time to reach, with any grounds for appeal ensuring it will still take some time to resolve.

The Ford/Ferrari F150 spat was so much easier to understand. On this, I've lost all interest in whatever results the court happens to return.

With these latest revelations; it's time for Tony Fernandes to give up on the Lotus name and rebrand as Air Asia and be done with it... this has turned into a farce; dragging a historic name through the mud for no real reason. Fernandes clearly doesn't care about the Lotus name; it's purely about commercial interests!
