Hydrogen technology is not in its infancy so to speak, there are cars on the market and there are hydrogen stations in California already.

The thing about F1 is, the quest for winning pushes technology to its limits and at a greater pace than your road car makers vying to out pace each other in terms of sales.

I dind’t know that. Why then car manufacturers don’t produce them for the whole market?

Mainly because the oil companies have spent the best part of the last 15 years or more deliberately holding the process up and because until HFC is widespread the car manufacturers still depend on the goodwill of the oil companies even the manufacturers who are fully behind HFC (Such as, HONDA Motor Company & certain parts of GM) can't easily force the issue.

i dont think we should worry about oil levels, lets be honest, its probably not going to run out for 100 years and by then none of us on here are going to be around!, so why worry? oh and modern car designers for road cars are being brainwashed by the eco heads, if i was a car designer, id totally ignore them and go for all singing all dancing petrol engine never mind this hybrid bolloux

Hybrid, pah! I want a petrol engine! It's the cost of fuel that is fuelling the smaller engine/hybrid concept; I'm assuming fuel prices are still extortionate in Europe? it's simply not cost effective to own a car that gets 15mpg any more, it costs $40 to fill up my 3.5 V6, I can't imagine how much that'll be in Europe (13 Gallon fuel tank).

Yeah, see, that's the same willful short-sightedness that got us into this mess. And it's not just oil levels, it's global warming too. The fact is, we should be transitioning to HFC in every place it is conceivable. It's not just cars, it's planes and the electricity generation industry too - we should be replacing as many of the coal and gas stations as possible with nuclear. But it ain't happening.

It might not affect us massively. Maybe. The reality is, it's already affecting us in some ways. And if we don't do something, it'll eventually be a problem our kids, or theirs, can't fight because the damage is done.

Does a Turbo Diesel count as "petrol"?

I read an article today that the cost of gas is to hit 4 dollars a gallon for regular unleaded here this year. It's already 3.50 for premium.

in bristol its ranging from 125p-128p per litre so its not cheap, but we've just had a vat increase by 2.5% and fuel duty too

The consumption of fossil fuel's has been an issue for decades yet I doubt anyone here will live long enough too see F1 running anything but an internal combustion engine.

WHY V4 IN F1??? It is Formula1. It must have V38 with top speed 800mph driving 0,009 miles per gallon

Just because all of them are businessmen. They have to take care about money for not been fired or get their companies broken.

Car makers can’t do whatever they want. There is a market and they must be successful in it or leave.

If we take into account the speed limits in every country, except Germany. Why do you need a super car in Europe? Just for showing the rest of the people that you can pay it? Nowadays in Spain, when you’re drunk or you exceed the speed limits, they retain your car considering it the instrument of the crime. Awful!

Fossil fuels will get rarer, and just become too expensive to use, we're past peak production of oil.

A solution will be found? Well, working and supporting one tends to help.

Going back to the F1 track; the solution is simple; slots ploughed into the track, filled with metal contacts and power with 100,000 volts, and large scale slot car motors!

F1 Scalextric, it's the future!!!

I, sadly, think you're right. Which irks me enormously, because if the sport used HFC the advances we'd make would be astronomical. Nothing encourages ingenious design more than competition.

If it comes down to it and I had the resources, I'd be interested in looking into starting up an international Open Wheel racing series based on HFC

Unfortunately things are as they are, not as we would like them to be. Of course the scalextric solution isn’t the future of F1, but I find unavoidable that the links between F1 and the car industry will have to be taken into account more and more in the future. It’s what I think, not necessarily what I want. :)
