This year Ferrari were criticized for their bar code livery and it's connection to Marlboro Cigarettes (http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2010/04/30/ferrari-denies-marlboro-branding/)... Now there is/was a link between Ferrari and Marlboro the brand but then what makes Renault think that the "Black and Gold" livery is any different to the bar code (http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2010/12/08/renault-reveal-r30-with-new-2011-lotus-livery/) to me I see a JPS branded car...

In my opinion I think cigarette advertising is a big part in F1 and I kind of miss it. I do not smoke at all and have no intention of doing so but all the logos and colour schemes that used to be put on the cars looked awesome at speed and of course were really iconic aswell.

If I'm honest I think they should be allowed on because they just look awesome.

Well I kind of agree but kind of don't... I too see JPS when I look at that, however that's purely because I've followed F1 for 25 years and have always known about the old JPS sponsored Team Lotus cars...

I guarantee if you grab a group of twenty 16 year olds who aren't avid F1 enthusiasts, show them that Renault and ask them, 'what tobacco product might this car make you think of?' - not a single one of them will identify it with JPS. Not one. It's those susceptible yongsters who the ban on tobacco advertising is aimed at protecting so that they don't find themselves swayed to taking up smoking. The black and gold livery will have no effect on them, but is good for long term F1 fans as it evokes great memories of the history of the sport.

Don't get me wrong, I love the colors as I too remember the old Lotus' .. I just wonder how long it will be before Imperial knocks on Renault's door...

Slap me around and call me Susan if I'm wrong, but I think Ferrari's new logo reminds you more of Marlboro than the old barcode one
I mean, the new one looks just like a Marlboro pack with the flip top lid.

When I was about, I guess 5-8 years old - something like that - I used to call the Lotus the "JPS car" and the Mclaren "the marlboro car". Proof if ever you needed it that cigarette advertising does not affect the young... :hehe:

Susan i agree

with logos and branding being a big part of my life I can say yes, the throw back to the JPS livery is a form of cigarette advertising. As it was and always will be JPS livery so to use it as a form of Lotus heritage is also using as a form of JPS heritage.

Same here.

Go back in history, the most beautiful cars were those (in MPOV) with cigarette logos on them: black Lotus (JPS), yellow Lotus and later Benetton (Camel), blue Williams (Rothmans), and in my opinion synonym for F1 - white-red McLaren (with yellow helmeti in it) :-)

I bought pack of Rothmans few years back, just to have it, havent smoked a single cigarette.

I thought exactly the same about the matter! I would allow cigarette advertising because I only see a cool looking logo.
