I didn't like the choice the FIA made in the first place and didn't like the way they put all their eggs in that Prodrive basket. At least they should have nominated a backup team that would prepare themselves to jump in if Prodrive couldn't make it.
Now it looks like we'll have the same old 10 teams plus the 'new' Force India on the grid.

Any other team potentially ready in time to jump in?

They were doomed before they started. There is no other team with a design of their own to jump in.

Would have to be a customer car at this point. No chance of building a brand new car by the start of March.

Well it could be possible, but they would need to be working flat out.
No one thought Super Aguri would make the grid

Would be cool to have Cosworth back. Maybe buy this year's chassis from Spyker/Force India formerly known as Jordan? That way maybe one could avoid controversy about customer cars...

Cosworth's 2.4 litre V8 is two years old, and was nothing special even then.

So? It's a new team. They'll have time to develop and improve - would be good to have another pro in F1 that can make engines.

Yeah I would have to agree with this point, just to be competative they had to tune their engines to breaking point.

Yes but this was at 21,000 RPM and most of the failures were not the engine but the team produced transmission and other bits. At 19,000 RPM I think they would do well.

The Cosworth engine from 2006 was a powerful engine, but they didn't develop it much throughout the season. It may not be much special with the 19K RPM limit in place but it's a start at least.
