Nico Rosberg has hit out at the constant media spotlight on the performances of his Mercedes Grand Prix team-mate and compatriot Michael Schumacher in F1 2010, arguing that his own strong form this season has been overlooked as a result of it.
In the all-Teutonic internecine duel at the Brackley-based outfit this year, it is Rosberg who comfortably holds the upper hand, out-qualifying Schumacher 13 times to just three thus far and outscoring the illustrious multiple F1 World Champion by a commanding 122 points to 54.
However, with all the focus having centred upon the sheer disappointment of the latter's comeback to competition in 2010 following a three-year 'retirement' hiatus, Rosberg contends that he is not receiving due credit for what he has accomplished – and claims that he has encountered just as many difficulties as his countryman in trying to adapt to the new, narrower Bridgestone front tyres this season and the distinct characteristics of the Mercedes MGP W01, the two key elements that have been pinpointed as the major causes behind Schumacher's struggles.
“I don't think my performance is well-enough recognised,” the 25-year-old told German weekly Sport Bild, adding that his own more recent experience compared to that of 'Schumi' 'hasn't advantaged me because it's mainly been with grooved tyres, and the current front tyre is different from anything else before it'. “[The situation] is the same for me. Actually, I think Michael has been able to adapt his driving style better than I have. Michael has 15 years of experience in F1.”
Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Vice-President Norbert Haug, however, has sought to reassure his young protégé that his efforts and achievements are held in very high regard by his team.
“I think it's absolutely obvious that Nico has so far extracted what was possible from the car,” the German underlined. “Only on a very few occasions was this not the case. I think he learned a lot with Williams, and if you would name one of the top guys that are currently young and experienced in F1 you would certainly mention Nico. He is a very good benchmark for probably everybody in the field.”
