If they're currently talking about pulling Porsche from LMP1, they're going to want to put it somewhere else.

From a what you get back from your investment, there is perceived value in the cachet of F1 that value pays more for an upscale or performance brand than it did for Honda and Toyota. The exodus of all the manufacturers had a lot to do with the global economic downturn, more so than what the actual cost of the sport.

The more a brand can leverage F1 to sell cars the more they see it as advertising budget as well as R&D. Porsche will be the brand they bring back if they choose to dive in.

Nope....can't see Porsche in F1 sorry.

The few times Porsche has been there they have only stuck around for short periods....usually in turbo-engine eras (1984-86 with Mclaren is a highlight for them). Their most recent time as an engine supplier was a disaster, the overweight "double V6" in the 1991 Footwork was just plain nasty.

Just remember that Porsche's involvement under the TAG branding was because Techniques d'Avant Garde is still a 15% owner of McLaren Racing. Porsche hasn't run under their brand in F1 since 1962....and that was after a massive 2 years.

They are a sportcar racing brand.

I can never stomach Lamborghini's designs. Give those guys a french curve already.

Please. I'll even donate a couple to the cause.

Lamborghini has the most recent involvement in F1 by any of the VW brands having been an engine supplier all the way through to 1991 I think....

Through 1993. IIRC, their last team was Larrousse. Except those were real Lamborghini engines, descendants of the motors Ferruccio put in his tractors. The lumps they run now are Audi hand-me-downs.

...I think Porsche's last year in F1 was 91 or 92 with the TAG engines.

1991. Footwork.

I would be interested to see Ruf become an engine constructor. They're already building a V-8 ...okay, it's a boxer 8, but it's based on the Porsche boxer 6.

With Porsche's new management, it's a crap shoot. They're somewhat an unknown quantity.

Just read a rumour that it might even happen sooner than that - they are looking into buying Toro Rosso, supposedly.

That would be VERY surprising, but a good surprise. It's got to be good for the sport as a whole to get manufactures start to come back in. But if that's the case, I have to think they'd partner with an engine vendor for the gap till 2013.

I couldn't imagine that it would be worth the cost to develop an in-house engine simply to run it short term.

Personally I'd rather not have another manufacturer team in F1; manufacturers are the ones that caused all the trouble last year with their threat to split F1 in half with the breakaway series, then two of the troublemakers, Toyota and BMW left the sport anyway, I'd rather not see a repeat so I'd be happy to see Porsche as engine supplier but not as a manufacturer team.

I think money of any sort is good for the sport at this point. I think Toyota and BMW left because they were going to leave, financially it wasn't a good investment. I just think that VAG (Porsche) would gain a hell of a lot more from the intangibles of the money invested in the sport than Toyota ever could.

I understand that Porsche is a sportscar manufacturer so would naturally get more out of motorsport pedigree in F1; Toyota are know for the Prius more than anything else in recent times. But I worry about too many manufacturers in the sport, dictating how the sport should be run and the most likely disharmony that will bring!

You're giving Porsche far too much credit. There's only one manufacturer capable of that much boat rocking.
