I've only owned a car for a few months now and for the most part the driving around edinburgh is pretty good but the other day I slept in and was a bit later than usual and got caught up in the school run and today I went to do a bit of shopping after work, women in those big BMWs and range rovers are mental.

At least you don't have an issue with Hummer's taking up a lane and a half on the school run like we do here in the US!

They're a dying breed of dinosaurs though

At least you don't have an issue with Hummer's taking up a lane and a half on the school run like we do here in the US!

No, not seen any Hummers yet but the school run mums here manage to do that well enough with their small (in comparison to hummers) 4x4s and also have no problem pulling out far too far when passing parked cars straight into oncoming traffic, queues! no such thing, just pull out without checking mirrors drive to the front and barge in blocking turn right lanes (left in the US) while waiting for their lane to start moving. Traffic lights and give way mean very little to them. /rant

I know there are male drivers that are guilty of doing these things too but nowhere near with the same consistency.

Ah, consistency is a bliss

Yeah, at least you know to expect them to do something dodgy. I don't think that came up in the hazard perception part of the driving test though.

You should see the driving in India.

I have. I've been there for months at a time and never worked up the nerve to drive myself, always hired a driver and car. India is one of the very few places where people ever could learn to drive like that. It is not possible to learn all their mysterious and arcane rules of the road in one lifetime, therefore you have to be reincarnated several times to get the knack of it.

Trust me, trying to *not* have a crash in Rome is a hard task.

I must admit, I generally only drive between the cities. When I arrive at the hotel, I park the car and hire a taxi. Congestion makes drivers crazy. Plus, once I'm in the city I prefer to be the tourist (and I'd hate to run over one of those damned scooters).

Trust me, trying to *not* have a crash in Rome is a hard task.

Congestion makes drivers crazy. Plus, once I'm in the city I prefer to be the tourist (and I'd hate to run over one of those damned scooters).

I am happy my brakes work today; three times in the space of about 200 metres; stupid people decided they were going to pull out from a parked position directly into my path despite having not having enough room to complete the manouvere safely and these are people with kids in the car, it makes me mad because I have my kids in the car!

Yes those idiots seem to forget about the safety of their 'precious cargo' and it pisses me off aswell.

Just as well I cruise along at 15mph in school zones, much to the annoyance of the people behind me... where kids are involved, I'd rather be safe than sorry!

Not to mention the HUGE FINES involved speeding through school zones .

That reminds me of a few years back when I was passing through central Edinburgh -- on one of those modern, 10-lane wide boulevards -- and an econo-box came shooting out of a side street and turned right into the five oncoming lanes of traffic (of which I was one). It was a middle-aged couple and I plainly could read the woman's lips when she said, "YOU'RE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD!".

Until that moment, I suppose he only wondered why the steering wheel was in such an odd place.

Where did you find "one of those modern, 10-lane wide boulevards" in edinburgh? There's nothing more than 4 lanes and most of those have 2 of them as bus lanes. They're even trying to squeeze a tram system in now.
