But then there was the illegal Benneton.
1994 and 1997 poor attempts at winning the championshp by unfair means(one successful, one not, but both cementing my dislike)

Those were the 3 things I was going to mention. As for the illegal car of 1994, everyone knew it but it was never proven. No help from the FIA there. They were blatently derelict in declining to investigate. They didn't want another season of some driver walking away as Prost did the previous year, least of all Senna, who had fro a few years been in their bad books for all his vocality. And it didn't hurt that the other one was Schumacher. For TV, this kid was gold( = more money in Bernie's pocket).

Not really comparable, but one thing is for sure - back then Schumacher only had Hakkinen and sometimes Coulthard to deal with. Now the competition is utterly incredible. There's probably 5/6 WDC-worthy drivers on the grid now, not to mention how close the cars are compared to back then.

I've stayed out of this one until now because I don't care for either driver much but I think Alonso's performance today makes a significant statement. He makes too many mistakes to be considered on a par with 1999 Schumacher. It's also significant that Schumacher was only half a second off Alonso's final qualifying time, admittedly set in different qualifying conditions, but Schumacher got the most out of his car. Alonso didn't. Consistently getting the best out of his car was Schumacher's trademark. Until Alonso can get his head together he'll always trail Schumacher circa 1999.

yeh alonso's is always the first to blame it on somthing / someone else, so much for the "complete package" everyone talks about.

I'm going to plump for Schumacher (as much as detest the man) as Schumi got on with business when things weren't going his way unlike Alonso who moans, moans and moans and usually drops back because he can't get past his perceived injustices! I don't see Alonso winning another five WDC's, he doesn't have the mental attitude!

PS: I have edited your post so people can only select one option, kinda silly if both options can be selected!

Schumi got on with business??? Team orders was much more open and allowed, he had no competition from his teammates and if someone looked to take the championship from him...what did he do....take them out. I also mean Alonso has much harder competition now for the championship and he did beat Schumi twice in Schumis best years. Therefore I put my vote on Alonso, that said I dont think he will manage as many championships and Schumi will always be the top dog.

Schumacher is KING.

:yikes:

Wasn't expecting you to say that, he left Ferrari diddn't he?

No. Ferrari didn't want him and preferred Alonso instead. In all honesty not a bad choice because Schumi is past his time and not as good as he used to. This is clear as his team mate always beats him. Alonso was also better than Schumi at the end of 2006 when Alonso won the title against Schumacher. However Schumi is still the king. As a passionate tifosa I cannot forget what Schumacher did for Ferrari. 1/3 of all Ferrari race wins are Schumi's, 1/3 of Ferrari's WDC are also Schumi's and 1/3 if Ferrari's WCC were won when Schumacher was at the team. If it wasn't for Schumacher, the likes of "evil" McLaren would of already surpassed Ferrari as the greatest and most successful team in F1. Schumacher would be at Ferrari now had Ferraro offered him a seat. Clearly they didnt and Schumacher went elsewhere. But now Alonso will hopefully be the new Schumi. But until he can actually come close to what Schmumacher achieved, then Schumacher without a doubt is the king.

1994 Spanish GP. Schumacher stuck in 5th gear for most of the race, also goes through a pit stop and finishes in 2nd!!! Could Alonso handle this? No way. He would cry like a baby and park it

When Alonso was at Renault and racing against Schumi we Ferrari tifosi used to call Alonso, "Alonso lo Stronzo". Has a bit of a rhyme to it as well. :hehe: We are not allowed to say that anymore as Alonso is actually one of us now and the only one that can give Ferrari either the WDC or WCC.

Would like to add even if MIchael was a huge cheat on track, the year he was comfortably heading to his 8th WDC (retirement year) and his engine blew up in Suzuka practically robbing off the much deserved WDC (he was brilliant that year), he went to the pits and shook hands with every team member and congratulating them on a great journey together.

Put Alonso in those shoes, I'd say a broken door or helmet would be the order of the day, and a sourpuss face to contend with. :hehe:

Alonso tends to work quite well with his team, normally praises them and supports them - see Monza where he put it down to his pit crew for example, in the races he gets quite over emotional though (well hopefully not anymore).
