I think Vettel's 2 DNFs were in Australia (brake failure) and in Turkey (crash with Webber)

Well in the end, it matters for McLaren how strong the other teams are in reliability. No matter what some other opinions might be about McLaren being "very solid for past few years", it doesn't matter squat if others have been even more solid. It's all R-e-l-a-t-i-v-e. There was no 'misinterpretation', just logic. Why not we compare this years McLaren to a Ferrari 4 years back and say McLaren are 4 seconds faster than the 4 year old Ferrari (2006)...it's ridiculous!

Fact is McLaren are 4th best this year in the reliability department, and Lewis has suffered 2 while heading for podium positions. That's a heck of a lot of points! :irked:

#1 it doesnt matter for how many points anybody was running at the time of the failure. A failure is a failure.
#2 it does matter squat if others have been even more solid, because they havent. look at the failure stats of the past 3-4 yrs and you'll see Mclaren has been the front runner with the best reliability. Lewis hitting Kimi in the pits is not lack of reliability.
#3 Comparing the pace of this yr's Mclaren to a Ferrari 4yrs back is ridiculous. But you are the only one bringing this out. Who has compared the pace of this yr's Mclaren to the 4yr old Ferrari?? or did you just learn how to spell ridiculous and wanted to show it off? in such case  well done. keep it up.:D

why not? :)

Because they're all racing under different circumstances, both in terms of the Formula itself and the rules as well as personal background and the car they're driving. You can only draw broad conclusions about drivers active at the same time, never mind looking at all the F1 drivers who have ever been in the sport.

I think we all agree that there's never going to be a difinitive 'Greatest ever driver' but there's always those that are in contention - The Sennas, the Clarks, Schumachers etc. Who has the potential to join them? It doesn't hurt to speculate.

yeh i agree, but greatest of that generation.

so 2000-2020 i guess?

Well that would I guess depend on what qualities you value most. My answer would be Button, because he possesses the characteristics I look for in a driver (Consistency, raw talent, racecraft, strategic mind, kindness to the machinery, down to earth personality, respectful relationship with the teammate, style). Equally though I could understand perfectly good cases being made for Alonso and Hamilton.

Famous last words. . .

I guess plenty of feelings have been hurt in this thread, f1ea - I always thought of you as one of the calmer posters, bad day at work?

Ha ha
I thought that was calm... but you know, if people are going to hang around and take what others say only to turn it around completely just to satisfy some sort of internet opinion... once its ok. It can even be funny. Even more than once, no problem; if its an honest mistake or misunderstanding, no problem at all. But if its done on purpose, its a waste of time, so it gets cut off :nono:

Guess it'll have to be EVEN calmer though ;) or the mods will have to use a cattle prod. hehe

Err...who gives a damn about how reliable McLaren was in previous years...I'm sorry? We are talking about THIS year's Championship aren't we? So has McLaren been the most reliable this year? Or not?

Yes I learnt how to spell ridiculous...if you want some spelling lessons to rise to my level, I'm here for you mate. Anytime.
