You will find that Italy is the most corrupt country in civilized Europe. Having spent a lot of time there I have seen how easy it is to buy a cop. 200 fags gets you off any kind of traffic violation.

In most other western countries the corruption is usually less public (until it gets discovered) and involves despicable characters in corporations and politics. So, if you take all the corrupt corporations together, I'm sure they are the most profitable business in almost every country.

I read in this weeks Time Magazine that the Mafia is the no.1 profitable business in Italy second to the National Power Company there. I don’t have the mag with me right now to quote, but it makes you think. Corruption in soaked deep into mechanisms of the Italian judiciary, political and sporting institutions.

We should not be surprised with anything that stinks coming from Marenello.

Every country is corrupt, where there is money there is corruption. Certain countries control most of the world's media therefore they are able to market themselves as hero's and their competition as villains.

As I said, I don't deny your little custom officer stories and I don't offer excuses for that at all. What I'm saying is that the invisible corruption in other countries is at least as bad as those small fish. And my point was to show you that your remark about Italy and Maranello/Ferrari based on your Time mag article is just out of context, a selective viewpoint and you shouldn't single out Italy in that way.

You can only keep the corruption invisible in a democratic and civilized society if it is minimal. When it is as rampant as it is in Italy, then keeping things quiet is impossible.

Go check out the scandal of their soccer leagues for a good example.

Britain is becoming a hotspot for corruption and bribery and the number of British companies affected by economic fraud in the past two years is almost twice the global average, according to a report released today by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
PwC's global economic crime survey, in which 302 UK companies were questioned, reveals corruption and bribery are the fastest-growing forms of economic crime in Britain.

British businesses are also naive about assessing risk, with only 17% believing they were "quite likely" or "very likely" to be subject to economic crime in the next two years. This is despite the fact that 48% of UK corporations suffered from some form of economic crime at some point in the past two years compared with 43% globally and 38% in western Europe.
