The key word here is "potential"

Which I believe everyone on the grid has some, or else they wouldn't be where they are. As we know potential can remain unfulfilled. In the sport, there are too many external factors that come in besides driving and since we tend to measure greatness with the only available yardstick (with is success) we may never have known the true potential of a driver that was not in the right team with the right mechanics with the right car at the right time.

Looks like Lewis Hamilton is ahead in the poll... whaddayaknow!

Lewis Hamilton is an amazing driver. He has been quick since he started his F1 career. His racecraft is also very good as he can pass like a madman. And he is young, so many years ahead of him. In terms of current drivers who have the potential to be remembered as one of the "great ones" I have to give the nod to him.

Robert Kubica, or Kimi.

It's hard to say, look how young Vettel is, if he stays in redbull and they don't slump away, along with maturing as a race team (making clever calls, sorting the reliability problems) he might end up pretty high on all time lists.

The most obvious choices would be Lewis and Alonso.

If Robert is that good a driver why is he not in one of the big teams? instead he has played around with the mid field teams for too long.

Not always true, I think the best season I have ever seen anyone drive was 1993 by Ayrton Senna, even though he wasn't in the best car and didn't win the title.

Robert was in Sauber, which in 07 and 08 was the third best team on the field, a step above the midfield teams, comparable to Mercedes this year or maybe better. He didn't exactly had to move...

Hamilton or Alonso. Although my opinion of Alonso has decreased as of late, he's making far too many mistakes.

Lewis hasn't the best car because Red Bull and Ferrari are better cars.So if he'll win the championship he'll deserve more credit.Just think how bad was McLaren in the start of the season.
Something I forgot.Button is overrated imo.He is perhaps the most overrated champion ever.I find ridiculous the comparisons with Hamilton(like Senna-Prost) and him because Lewis is by far a better driver than Button.

I think you could have started a thread, by saying:
LEWIS IS THE BEST DRIVER EVER. Please come in here and re-affirm my thoughts.

Well, I voted for Lewis, but we already have the greatest F1 driver ever, and will be like that for quite a while...
