Kubica hit him from behind. Kubica's fault (drive through pen was stupid though). Much like Vettel DROVE INTO Webber.

OK, if we are after blame, surely Alonso is to blame for Vettel driving into Webber. Had Alonso not crashed the safety car would never have needed to come out. It's all Alonso's fault.

I'm an old time Kimi fan, and I don't realy buy into all this conspiracy stuff, so hopefully I'm not going to be accused of being baised in this.

When I saw the Youtube footage of that incident, it seemed to me that it actually was Vettel's fault. Hamilton wasn't driving too great behind the safety car but not bad considering his experience. What I saw in that video was Webber trying to push Hamilton into a mistake. He saw how fast he was approaching the safety car and tried to give him the squeeze. Although Lewis had to brake, he didn't have to brake too hard as he, and Kimi, had been finding a lot more grip by going wide there.

I think Hamilton isn't really guilty of anything other than being a rookie. Webber is guilty of doing the racing stuff I like to see in F1, and Vettel is guilty of trying to keep up with the action and not paying attention to what was going on. Although I liked the fact that Webber was trying to push a rookie into putting his car off the track or in an illegal position, I think he would have been better off exploring the lines the faster guys were taking while under safety car conditions.

Just my observations, but I think that's why the penalties went the way they did.

I like Hamilton's answer at the end. So who's telling the truth. I side with Hamilton but why are the heads at McLaren trying to shield him. So what if he made a mistake!


McLaren figures reject 'wrong button' claims

McLaren figures have vehemently denied claims that Lewis Hamilton's 'finger trouble' cost the British rookie the 2007 title in Brazil last Sunday.

The Canadian newspaper La Presse reportedly quoted Hamilton this week as admitting that he pressed a button on his steering wheel during the Interlagos race that selected neutral and left him without power for half a minute.

Spanish sports newspaper Marca told a similar story on Thursday, claiming that the button Hamilton pushed was coloured yellow and activated the pit lane speed limiter.

On-board replays of the incident depict Hamilton pressing a green button with his left thumb, which according to photographs is marked 'N' (for neutral).

In Thursday's edition of Bild-Zeitung, however, Mercedes-Benz competition director Norbert Haug denies the claims.

"No, it was not Lewis' mistake. At the moment we suspect a problem of a (gearbox) control valve."

A McLaren spokeswoman elaborated: "It was due to a default in the gearbox that selected neutral for a period of time.

"It was not as a result of Lewis pressing an incorrect button on his steering wheel," she added.

McLaren chief executive Martin Whitmarsh explained: "It would appear that the barrels that change gear went out of control - and out of control of the driver - and that's probably hydraulic."

Even Hamilton contradicted the reports.

He told Bild: "That is total rubbish!"

Surely if Hamilton has admitted one things it's ridiculous for Mclaren to contradict him. Like someone said so what if he pushed the wrong button - there's no embarassment involved!

Hamilton wrongly quoted on gearbox failure

A leading Formula One journalist has apologised to McLaren for a quote wrongly attributed to Lewis Hamilton, autosport.com has learned.

Hamilton was quoted by Montreal's newspaper La Presse as admitting he himself caused the gearbox problem, which saw him drop from sixth to 18th at the early stages of the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Veteran Formula One journalist Luc Domenjoz' report from the event included a direct quote from Hamilton himself, saying he had pressed the wrong button by mistake on his steering wheel, putting the car into neutral.

The report was immediately quoted by numerous Internet websites and was seen as proof that Hamilton cracked under the pressure of the world championship finale.

However, Domenjoz yesterday admitted that he did not talk to Hamilton and explained that he relied on information he heard in conversation with other journalists, who in turn were quoting what Hamilton had supposedly said to his engineers.

The highly respected Frenchman further explained that he was under deadline constraints and did not have a chance to verify the information with Hamilton himself or with McLaren.

When approached by autosport.com, Domenjoz said: "my mistake was using a quote by Lewis when I did not talk to him myself. I had other verifiable information and I stand by my report, but under the time pressure I made a mistake by using that quote."

The incident comes on the back of ongoing criticism by McLaren team boss Ron Dennis for the damage the Internet medium is causing to media coverage.

"I have said so often, the Internet has been the bane of our lives," he said at Interlagos last weekend. "This is an uncontrolled, unedited, source of information that is fed into the media.

"Of course, I am not critical at all of the media. It just makes it so hard because everything is so instantaneous. You are just spending too much time trying to correct the inaccuracies that come into the system."
