None of the cars with the new diffuser have caught fire yet :)

nor melted

There's always a first time for everything! Ferrari are obviously concerned it might be an issue to have temperature sensors on the rear wing!

he he I know. It is definitely an issue... before things catch fire and/or melt... there's signifficant deformation already taking place. wouldn't want that.

Apparently others also questioned Ferrari using a media day to test new components:

Teams seek to clarify testing rules

By Jonathan Noble Saturday, June 26th 2010, 17:32 GMT

McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh says moves will be made to clear up any 'ambiguity' in Formula 1's testing rules, following Ferrari's use of a filming day last week to try out its new exhaust system.

Although Ferrari used a legitimate filming opportunity to trial its new blown diffuser, the fact the outfit was able to do some meaningful running with its new system has left a number of rival teams unhappy.

Whitmarsh, who is also chairman of the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA), said that the testing agreement between teams would now be clarified so all parties were clear about what was and was not allowed.

"I didn't think the regulations needed clarification but for some they clearly do," said Whitmarsh, who ruled out his team using a filming day to trial its new Silverstone update package next week.

"We will clarify the regs. Given I am calling for that then we will not be doing a filming day. We will be doing a straight-line running day, which will consume one of those days. That is the fair and proper thing to do."

He added: "Formula 1 is a very competitive business and people are going to try and take advantage of any perceived ambiguity. It isn't ambiguous in my English interpretation of it, but others obviously thought it was.

"We have got to remove that ambiguity."

Whitmarsh believes that, with the world economic situation improving, it could be time for F1 to return to allowing some mid-season testing.

"A little bit of testing in F1 would be the right thing," he said. "We had to take significant measures, given the crisis that our economy and F1 had, but I think now as we can see and feel signs of the economy improving, then hopefully we can go back to testing.

"F1 is about running cars. I think drivers enjoy testing, the teams enjoy going testing and developing cars, so I think it is a good thing to do and progressively, as the health and well-being of the teams develop, then hopefully we can do it."

whitmarsh's desire for clarification is in the same standard as questions of f-duct legality or last years double diffuser. its F1 competitor speak for "damn those clever bar stewards"

as for other points brought up. the carbon fiber breaks dont warp with the heat. i doubt the body work will. my guess is the temp sensors on the rear wing probably do more for getting a picture of the air flow as opposed to any "melting" concerns

i dont buy the trick ride height theory, the exhaust temps will remain constant through out the race while the car weight will lighten raising the ride height. this will mean mechanical grip will suffer and cause a race long cornering performance degradation.

so its got to be about increasing the pressure differential of hot exhaust gasses Vs cooler ambient air adding down force

no its not, hes asking for clafication on the way they "tested" the part not on the part itself.

Mclaren is going to have this same setup for the British Grand Prix, however to test it they are going to use one of the teams alloted straight line test days.

Ferrari instead choose to run this new exhast system on a media day, media days as i understand it are when teams are given very very hard brigestone tires and get to film the car for tv adverts and such they are not supposed to be used to test new car parts.

Some of the teams are unhappy Ferrari did this, so Whitmarsh is asking for clarifaction to see if Ferrari broke the rules.

yes im quite aware of the issue at hand. its what the sport calls creative interpritation of the rules. or if your on the other side of the fence its call dirty and underhanded. what it isnt called is ilegal.

Well thats why Whitmarsh has stopped short of calling them cheats.

Its very clear cut in my eyes you need to test a part there are straight line test days.

You want to sell some products there are media days.

I would imagine the clarification to be something along the lines that the car run on filming days is the same spec car that was unvailed at the start of the season

Apparently McLaren is going to be introducing their blown exhaust ahead of schedule at Silverstone. In Valencia one of the commentators on SPEED mentioned that it's not the hot exhaust gas being blown into the diffuser itself that's creating the advantage, but the fact that the rules state that when you look at the bottom of a car, the only thing you can see is either floor OR exhaust. By moving the exhaust down it allows more room up on top to manipulate the design of the rear diffuser around the exhaust pipes and gain efficiency from it. I'm curious since I haven't heard that description anywhere else.

The F1 teams have closed a loophole in the testing regulations with teams now banned from running new parts during days of promotional filming.

Earlier this season, Ferrari caused outrage amongst their rivals when they ran their new blown diffuser during a day of filming at Fiorano.

Rivals immediately called for the rules to be clarified with Ferrari also adding that there is a need 'to tidy up the wording.'

And that has now been done.

With immediate effect, all teams are banned from running any new parts on their cars during filming or promotional days.

McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh has welcomed the ruling, although added that he felt it was rather straight forward to start with.

"I personally did not feel there was any ambiguity, but others argued that there was," he told Autosport "But that is pressure, and when people are under pressure they try and take a different view.

"It is now clear that, if you are doing a demo run, then you must use components that have been raced before - and it has to be a legitimate demo run."
