After the session Ross Brawn said it could set a dangerous precedent if teams start sending their drivers out without enough fuel to get back to the pits.

"I don't know all the details so it's hard to comment," he said. "But we must not come to a situation where cars run out of fuel after their last lap because they want to be running as light as possible."

The situation was discussed on Sunday during a meeting of team bosses and race director Charlie Whiting. Whiting reportedly clarified that, in future, any car that runs out of fuel at the end of qualifying will be summoned to the stewards, risking penalties if the reason for the stoppage is not 'force majeure'.

I think that if a car can not make it back to the pits/Parc Ferme under it's own power then that car should be excluded from the race or given a 10 place grid drop... Hamilton was very lucky this weekend to get away with a $10,000 fine!!!

:yikes: thats a bit harsh
Schumacher didnt make it back to the pits in Turkey, what would you have penalised him with? even though that was force majeure in play, or was it Ross..... :hehe:

As far as I am concerned; it's the same situation... teams have a responsibility to fuel their cars to make it back to the pit lane. If they run out of fuel because of short filling then a serious penalty needs to be enforced for all unless the team can prove that it was some sort of technical failure!

One would think that even with the 'push to pass' option considered the teams would make it a priority that the car can finish the race completely, have enough fuel for testing and make weight.

Lewis did his part and the penalty could be blamed on the team.

If they run out of fuel then their fastest lap (typically the one set with lowest fuel) should be dropped, i think that's fair.

Let's just shoot the driver right there. Merciless!

You cant penalise cars just because you think they should make it back under their own power. Again the rules weren't clear and needed clarification. Wasnt it something about a memo went round a fewyears ago about this? You cant penalise teams and drivers on that basis. Ok if you cant stop on the track without a grid penalty then now its clear..but it wasnt before the race.

Frankly the F1 rulebook has been completely useless in recent seasons, too many ambiguous rules! I believe if a car stops on the track before it was short fuelled to get an advantage, the team/driver should be punished as we know one lap of fuel can make a [relatively] large difference to lap time
