NJ, the state where you are not allowed to make left turns :P What's up with that? Having to use a loop around lane to make a left turn?

How bizarre; I thought that was a joke so I Googled it and it's true... I'd rather idle for a few minutes to cross traffic than drive around in circles all day!!!

Although apparently it does save the environment as less gas is used; it's true Mythbusters tested it!

They still stand still and idle as they don't have the right of way or have to wait until they get a green light.

Yes but the theory is that you don't have to wait as long hence saving fuel, I still find the turning right on red an odd concept as that isn't the case in most of Europe!

But that is actually a good one as it keeps the traffic flowing - many times you have a red light and no traffic is coming from the left, so rather than idling and blocking people behind you, you can take a right turn when it's safe and get going.

Turning right on red is a great idea in theory assuming that drivers can judge distance and get up to speed before oncoming traffic reaches them. From a European driving standpoint; sometimes I just sit there before I realise I can actually go on red; although there are some traps where right turns are not allowed on red and there is usually a police car around the corner to stop/ticket any driver that doesn't see the sign assuming that it's fine to turn right on red, yes this has happened to me!

Its actualy easier driving in the US than the UK once you get used to the other side of the road thing the cars are huge and the roads are massive so your not ever trying to squeze though silly gaps etc..

France is the worst place i've driven becuase everyone there seams to have a deathwish.

That's not true; in Kansas there is a huge discrepancy in lane widths; there's a highway here where at points you can almost fit two cars in one lane and a few miles up the road the lanes get much smaller to the point that some cars don't fit within the lanes... luckily I drive a medium sized car so it's not a problem and driving in the UK, I am used to narrow lanes! My wife wonders how we manage driving in the UK, especially when talking country lanes where it's barely wide enough for a car, yet it's two way traffic!

Whats your personal experience with driving in the US?

The width of the lanes does add a sense of security but I bet you saw some crazy fools right?

Whenever I go on holiday and the steering wheel is on the other side, I will at some point get into the car and think somone has nicked the steering wheel lol.

I have lived in Cyprus for 4 years and it is the 2nd worse place in the world that I have seen driving.

The worst was Kuwait, where traffic lights and sides of the road just don't matter.

My biggest bug bear with driving at the moment is that tyre manufacturers spend millions of pounds/dollars designing tyres so that they have latteral grip. If you go around corners faster you will not have to accelerate as much on the exit so you will save fuel.

and therefor depriving anyone with a V12 engine from listening to their sweet sweet wail as they accelerate hard out of a corner :D

Just a caution: In all of NYC it is illegal to turn right on red!

In Quebec It was illegal to turn right on a red until a few years ago. But it is still not permitted in downtown Montreal. The reason is they don't know what would happen. It's home to the worst collective driving in the commonwealth.
It's Caveat Emptor for pedestrians!

In Toronto, well, mostly in the heart of downtown, there are alot of intersections you can't turn right on red and of course they have signs telling you so because it's an exception to the law that allows right turns on red.

A friend moved here from Trinidad in the 80s and was told you can turn right on red. It's a novelty to them. Anyway he was not told you have to stop first! So of course the first time he tried it he got a ticket.

I was reading that my own hometown was voted worst drivers in Canada. I was so shocked I had to move to the right lane to finish the article :hehe:
