It looks like Sauber have won the race to become the first team to copy McLaren's controversial rear wing design.

McLaren arrived in Bahrain a fortnight ago with small flaps in the rear wing of the MP4-25, much to the dismay of most of their competitors.

However, the FIA gave the flaps - which is apparently operated by the drivers who use their right knee to cover the flow of air into the cockpit tunnel - the green light despite protests of McLaren's rivals.

This resulted in several teams indicating that they have no alternative but to copy the design.

According to BBC F1 commentator Jonathan Legard, Sauber have already developed their own device and are considering whether to use it during this weekend's Australian Grand Prix.

He wrote on Twitter: 'Sauber weighing up whether to run their version of the McLaren 'f duct'. McLaren surprised. Took them 2 yrs to develop it.'


2 years to develop 1 month to copy, and one Saubers drivers is Pedro Dela Rosa who just happens to be an Ex-Mclaren test driver....hmmm

So? that's the value of an experienced driver :hehe:
The same happened with Ross Brawn's super diffuser. It took a bit longer because it is a more complex feature, but the seizable rear wing.... that should be pretty easy to copy. Frankly, i wonder why there hasnt been some sort of 'patent' rights to F1; its difficult to patent an idea though...

Sauber need some extra speed, they were disappointing in Bahrain.

Ya they do dont they. I hope that the FIA pays a bit more attention and outlaws the stalling of the rear wing. I'm sure we will be seeing more clever designs soon.

I see the Alonso V McLaren scenario here, plus De La Rosa was one of the original suspects...


Nah, I don't see any problem. Unless he took property with him but I doubt that.

If the concept works for Sauber, then Peter Pink Woolen's move there will have been very worth while. Sauber could do with a "boost" as well after their poor race in Bore-rain.

I think I'd better stop calling him Peter Pink Woolen now...

yeah imagine that last year...on top of liegate, crashgate and ddd rule issue there would be lawsuits people copying each other.

Liegate?? that was no big deal.
Crashgate was terrible, and the DDD was just failure of the FIA to 1) be clear with rules and 2) act fast enough to have either banned or approved the thing before half a season :rolleyes:

If there's no patents, then what's the problem with Sauber 'copying' Mclaren's wing concept? :)

I have no problem with it, it's not like they stole the raw data or anything, they just created their own version based on what they've managed to see on track etc...

The patent thing would basically kill f1!!
