Yup. I think it is mainly Red Bull and they've just dragged Ferrari in for 'support' judging by the wording in some of the quotes. I fear it might be banned cause they're the only team using it... which sucks because i think it's a pretty neat trick. :(

In response to claims that Red Bull and Ferrari are considering issuing a protest regarding the legality of the rear wing on the McLaren MP4-25, the Woking team has said that it is unaware of any problems.

"We're very confident that our car is entirely legal, and we're not aware of any protest," a spokesman for the Woking team told Pitpass. "In fact, we've spoken to Ferrari this morning and they're not aware of any protest either."

Red Bull and Ferrari are said to be concerned at a 'slot' on the rear wing which is thought to reduce the level of drag on the rear wing and thereby increase straightline speed.

Seems its just Redbull.
if its not a moving part then its not illegal.

Sometimes F1 regulations leave me flat and confused. It want you to be innovative, however if you are too innovative, then things get banned. So to buds point, I hope they look at it as they looked at brawn last year and let it go.. I things like this should be sussed out early on.. not a week before the start...

I day before first practice "Oh Look at that freaky bit, its illegal!!" Its been there the entire time of testing and now you are just seeing it.. hmmmm

Ah but, even if it has been there the entire time (as opposed to an aero update they brought along to Catalunya), Mclaren hadn't yet posted the fastest time. If Lotus had it, for example, nobody would care because it doesn't come over as an advantage over the rest. Just my cynical viewpoint :P

“There’s a bit of a fuss over McLaren’s rear wing,” confirmed Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. “They have a slot on it [that affects the air flow] and they can pick up a lot of straight-line speed. I think it will get resolved before the first race. We’ve asked the FIA for clarification although I think Ferrari are probably more excited than we are to be honest.”

The situation brings to mind the controversy last year which saw three teams — Brawn GP, Williams and Toyota — develop 'double-decker’ rear diffusers that gave them a huge aerodynamic advantage over the rest of the field.

Despite howls of protest from Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren, the diffuser was eventually declared legal and Brawn GP’s Button won six of the first seven races to take a decisive lead in the championship.

Horner stressed that the ramifications this time were nowhere near as serious, and even admitted that his team had begun developing a similar part in case it was declared legal.

“Basically, if you stall the wing you take all the drag off it and pick up straight-line speed,” Horner explained. “It’s something that’s been done quite a lot over the years but with the wing separators you’re not supposed to do that. Our question ultimately will be: 'Is it clever design or is it in breach of the regulations’?”

He added: “They must be very confident that it’s legal. I would think it will be legal.”

I had a look into this earlier, and it seems the grey area stems from this 15cm section in the centre of the rear wing where basically anything goes.... apparently BMW ran something similar (ie, a 'blown' rear wing part) in Japan last year. However, from the info i have read, it seems like this 'slot' on the McLaren rear wing runs across most of the wing. This may be what Red Bull are complaining about. Don't take my word on that at all though. :scratchchin:

That's a neat trick. Certainly a neater trick than a sticker to trick people RE: the location of the exhausts.

Heh. Although the placement of the exhausts themselves is quite novel... As is that small air inlet up near the cockpit of the McLaren, which, depending on who you believe, is solely for aero purposes rather than cooling ones.

RBR is just upset that they didn't think of it, along with SF they made the most noise about the DDD last year.

True. It's just amusingly optimistic of Red Bull to think the other teams would fall for such a flimsy act of subterfuge.
