Here is an update on how Bernie feels about HD... Still Frugal

http://www.pitpass.com/fes_php/pitpass_ ... t_id=39947

Hey Bernie, seeing as how about half of all the money brought in by F1 goes directly to your pocket, could you maybe give like say .1% of that to improve the viewing for the fans?

Bernie Ecclestone: It's a ways down on my list, we still need a medal system, shortcuts, power-ups and red turtle shells first.

Personally I dont care if there's access to HD or not as I don't have a HD TV or sky box. Makes no difference to me.

I heard Bernie was in talks with King Koopa to host a race around his castle.

Same here. I wouldn't pay Sky extra money just for a handful of TV channels and TV shows broadcast in quality thats a bit better. I'll wait till it's worthwhile.

So to that extent, what Bernie's says makes sense. Wait till it's worthwhile.

Actually I was surprised with the variety of channels in HD now... They had an advert and there's about 35 HD channels now.. not too bad really.. still... pricey..

You think that's bad? Those morons want to launch 3DHDTV Channels within 2 years.

Hi,

Not sure all host countries have HD capability yet. Most probably do, but I'm just guessing.

There may also be some sort of licence fee that the BBC will have to pay to host countries for the extra benefit of HD images. This will have to be passed-on to Bernie, that could be a stumbling block me thinks. I can't see BBC wanting to take those fees on their chin, it's not in their interests.

On the cost side of things, BBC already provides their HD channel FOC, well, part of the licence fee - no extra sub's required. All you need is the necessary equipment. Freesat, Sky & Virgin all do HD boxes which would show the BBC HD channel for no extra cost.

Freeview viewers are getting HD in-time for the football world cup this year, but be warned, only NEW Freeview HD enabled boxes will give HD. Existing Freeview boxes (even TV's with built-in freeview tuners) will not give HD images.
Here's a full explanation :- http://www.commtexx.co.uk/in_the_news_49.html

If you MUST have HD, get Sky/Virgin/Freesat. BBC HD is free from that point-on. Or, wait until May/June, get a Freeview HD box then.

Personally, we have upscaling, and if your TV gives a good SD image, there's not a major difference. Yes there is a difference, just wouldn't call it a 'major' one, that's all. Another point to note, Super-HD is coming, but probably not for a while yet, gotta 'milk' everyone for HD yet. When that happens we'll all be upgrading TV's, etc yet again. Hmmm. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/show ... p?t=425526

Upscaling will give you 1080i, that's 1080 interlaced lined, 540 odd lines, refreshed with 540 even lines, over and over.

Usually, HD can be 720p or 1080p, although only a Blu-Ray disc (or xBox360) will give you 1080 lines with progressive scan (p). As far as i know, there's no broadcaster in this country that transmits 1080p. We bought a HD InFocus projector last year with a 7ft screen (horizontal 7 ft) - the HD pictures are more noticeable on that compared to SD images, the 42" Fujitsu plasma is harder to distinguish. (assuming you have a good SD source signal) F1 thru the projector is superb btw.

A much better explanation of HD TV and resolution can be found here :- http://www.cnet.com/hdtv-resolution/

Happy reading.

Yeah, upscaling can give you a (fake) 1080i image, but it's still based on a picture less than half the height & width, therefore less than a quarter the size. 1080i is broadcast HD, so if FOM TV were piping out HD, they would likely use that (As opposed to the far superior 720p or 1080p) size as well. The difference would be the source. It does not matter how many times people say otherwise, a 480i or 576i image upscaled to 1080i does not look even close to as good as a true 1080i picture, or better yet, a 1080i feed of a better source (Say, 1080p).

Incidentally, many people who receive Freeview pictures through their computers via TV Tuners (And I believe those who do it through the PLAYSTATION 3's PlayTV) will be able to receive HD Freeview pictures without buying new hardware, since the software can be updated to handle the HD feeds.

There may also be some sort of licence fee that the BBC will have to pay to host countries for the extra benefit of HD images. This will have to be passed-on to Bernie, that could be a stumbling block me thinks. I can't see BBC wanting to take those fees on their chin, it's not in their interests.

There will be no such cost. There are no host broadcasters to deal with, FOM TV now shoots all the races and supplies the broadcasters with the "World Feed" to which broadcasters add their own commentary tracks, package inside their punditry and other paraphernalia such as titles and then they pipe that out to the viewers.

The additional costs incurred come from FOM TV needing to purchase HD equipment, but they have to upgrade the equipment regularly anyway - and all the sporting events competing with F1 found a way to pay for it. Doubtless, FOM will charge more for the HD World Feed, but that's to be expected. That's not going to put the BBC off. Free HD is their flagship product right now. Aside from which, we already KNOW the BBC want the HD feed because they are amongst the group of broadcasters who have been asking for it.

Thanks for correcting me on the FOM feed. I knew that now you say, I feel a bit silly now. (Forgetfulness comes as standard as you get old)

I did also mean to say that I read somewhere that HD in F1 will not happen this year but there was something said that it should definitely be 2011.

Let's see.

We use 720p from our Sky box, many people think 1080i is better merely because it's a bigger number. the 'p' means progressive scan, 720 lines of it. Much better for fast or moving images, smoother pictures. The 'i' means interlaced, which effectively means just 540 lines of new information at a time repeated for odd then even lines. 1080p is better for the fact that you get a full 1080 lines with progressive scan. Blu-Ray discs look pretty damn impressive.

Coming back to F1, let's hope everyone has a good year, good battles with more than just two drivers would be nice.

ps. Didn't know that about the PS3's play tv. We have that too. Had it about 14 months ago when the snow played havoc with the Sky dish. DOH! Good as a back-up.

Good luck everybody.

I've looked into it, Sony were talking about the PlayTV being HD-capable a lot around the launch, but that seems to be restricted to Continental Europe. No word on if they're planning on changing that.
