Audi called for further investigation

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77145

By Glenn Freeman Thursday, July 23rd 2009, 14:46 GMT

The German motorsport authority (DMSB) has confirmed that it will hold further discussions with Audi team members regarding its team orders investigation on July 31.

The officials declared the results of Sunday's race at Zandvoort provisional after suspicions were raised by the manner in which Mattias Ekstrom caught and passed his Audi team-mates Martin Tomczyk, Alexandre Premat and Oliver Jarvis in the closing stages.

All of the drivers and team members involved were interviewed about the situation following the race, and the DMSB has spent the past few days analysing the data at its disposal.

However, a verdict has been delayed as the officials want to speak to the drivers and Audi teams again. AUTOSPORT understands that the DMSB wants to hold more discussions because it has found something that that doesn't correlate with the story presented by Audi last Sunday.

Rather than force everyone involved to go to the DMSB's base in Frankfurt, it has been decided that further interviews will take place on the Friday before the race weekend at Oschersleben.

The DMSB has also confirmed that a decision will be announced before qualifying for the fifth round of the season that gets underway on August 1.

Team orders have been banned in the DTM since the end of the 2007 season, and Audi has denied that any of the drivers were told to slow down to aid Ekstrom's title bid, instead claiming that the Swede was so much faster than his team-mates because he had much fresher tyres due to a late final pitstop.

Part of Audi's defence included data comparing its drivers' lap times with that of race winner Gary Paffett, as his pace also dropped dramatically at the end of the race. However, the 2005 champion claimed that he was backing off simply to save his car, rather than because of any problems.

"I was coasting at the end - just saving the tyres," he said. "I backed off at around 1.5 seconds per lap and the gap was still getting bigger behind me."

Audi also raised suspicions by reportedly blocking its team radio communication to German broadcaster ARD for the final 10 laps of the race. However, the DMSB has since had access to all of the team's radio transmissions, along with data that includes speed, throttle and brake traces.

BMW hints at DTM comeback

By Glenn Freeman Friday, August 7th 2009, 09:00 GMT

BMW has been linked with a switch to the DTM after high-ranking staff indicated that its future touring car activity will not necessarily be in the World Touring Car Championship.

Following the German manufacturer's announcement that it is to withdraw from Formula 1 at the end of this season, this week's AUTOSPORT magazine reports that the company is seeking alternatives to the WTCC, of which it has been openly critical throughout this year.

BMW board member Klaus Draeger said: "We have deliberately spoken about an involvement in touring cars in the broader sense."

The company's motorsport director, Mario Theissen, added: "WTCC is part of the touring car spectrum. It is no secret that we aren't particularly happy about the developments last year and this year, but no decision has been made.

"In any case, we will be present in touring car racing, both with works-supported programmes and in customer competition. We could also imagine other future projects, which we are not ready to talk about yet."

The DTM is seeking to attract a third manufacturer to join Mercedes and Audi, and the series last week announced a freeze on development into 2010 ahead of the introduction of a new set of technical regulations for the 2011 season.

Mercedes driver and joint championship leader Gary Paffett has said he would welcome the addition of BMW to the DTM.

Talking about the possible arrival of BMW in the series in his exclusive AUTOSPORT column, Paffett said: "To have the big three German manufacturers in the series would be awesome. Everyone agrees that we need a third manufacturer and it would be great for the championship if it happens."

Darn, Scheider won. I was hoping it would end up going to Paffett in the end, but that was a long shot. Still, congratulations to Timo. :)

Hopefully, Paffett will get a drive in F1 next year.

I got to watch the '09 DTM event at Brands Hatch today on SPEED and liked it but then SPEED aired the '09 BTCC race at Knockhill which was fair more enjoyable. Man SPEED is on a roll as they are now showing the '09 BTCC event at Oulton Park  .
