Vulcan 607 - its about the Vulcan Bombing raid during the Falklands war, its no so much a war story its more about how they get a ageing Cold war Bomber on a 8000 mile return trip to do this mission.

I have not read the book but my old boss was part of the operation and he always banged on about it, not sure if it was luck or military precision lol

Bit of Both from what i'm reading.

I've finally found my copy of Empire of the Sun so I'm starting that right now :D

How do so many of you manage to read more than one book at a time? If I don't completely concentrate on one book then it seems to lose it's impact with me, I follow the plot but I don't get as absorbed in what's going on. I can just about manage a fiction and non-fiction book on the go but I completely lose it with two fiction books at once. :(

Yeh i'm the same i can mange a non-fiction book or a magazine with a fiction book but i'd get very confused reading two fiction books lol

I think it depends on the type of book. I read a LOT of trash so you don't have to concentrate very hard - and even if you forget what's happening, you tend to pick up the story pretty quickly. Also, I tend to read a mix of books - say one action, one crime, one fantasy, one non-fiction - so it's easy not to get them mixed up. I think that's why I haven't read many of the classics - they take far more concentration that most of the pap I tend to read!

The problem with reading so much crap is that you forget what you have and haven't read - I now put all my books up on GoodReads so that I remember what I've read. In just under two years, I've read 177 books, most of which have been truly terrible :boxedin:

I'm a classics fan so maybe that's my problem. :scratchchin:
I've been reading the same sort of novel for years, now I'm trying to branch out a bit. But my favourite books always seem to be 19th century classics and nothing else ever lives up to them.

"Williams" by Maurice Hamilton. Got it over Christmas and currently I've got as far as the days when Sir Frank first started racing cars and how he sneakily managed to get hold of the latest Brabham chassis for Piers Courage to drive - much to the distaste of Sir Jack Brabham and Ron Tauranac.

I've been looking at that in WHSmith for weeks. Is it worth a buy? The price was a little steep at the time but it's not too expensive on amazon now.

When I bought it at WHSmiths I got it for £10, so it's half price now. :)

I've just finished my second read of Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. I love this mans work, he's easily my joint favourite author alongside Jane Austen.

I've always wanted to Crime and Punishment. And Jane Austen =
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind

I've not read that, but I saw the film a couple of years ago. It was... intriguing! Especially the end -I don't think I've ever seen such an odd ending :hehe: Ever since then, I've wanted to read the book, but never gotten around to it. Do you recommend it?

I've never seen the movie but I would like to watch it after I finish the novel. I'm only page 31 but it's very good. The author uses some interesting similes.

I have no idea how I do it, but somehow the books that I am reading don't get in the way of each other.

I had to read that for school in 2008. Personally, I found the plot disturbing and depressing but the author seems like a good writer...if that made any sense. Then, of course we had to read the sequel (A Thousand Splendid Suns) and that was also pretty depressing.

I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak.
Markus Zusak used to write children's books, but his adult fiction is just absolutely amazing.
He is by far my favourite author, talent coming out of his ears.
I may be a little biased since he lives twenty minutes away from me, and I shop at the same place as him ;)
But in all honesty, gorgeous writing.

Here are some excerpts.

The Book Thief was a book that was basically narrated by 'Death'. I thought that was a brilliant idea.
"I wanted to tell her many things, about beauty and brutality. But what could I tell her about those things that she didn't already know? I wanted to explain that I am constantly overestimating and underestimating the human race-that rarely do I ever simply estimate it. I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, and its words and stories so damning and brilliant."

"A small but noteworthy note. I've seen so many young men over the years who think they're running at other young men. They are not. They are running at me."

And I am the Messenger
“A dark wind makes it through the trees.

The sky is nervous. Black and blue.

My heart applauds inside my ears, first like a roaring crowd, then slows and slows till it’s a solitary person , clapping with unbridled sarcasm.”

"She closes the door completely, and I crouch there. I allow myself to fall forward and rest my head on the door frame. My breath bleeds. My heartbeat drowns my ears."

Oh my gosh. I love Markus Zusak's books. Those books are both amazing and I have no idea which one I like more.

Yes! I had to read The Book Thief for school and I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. Definitely one of the best and most interesting books I have ever read. I Am The Messenger was one of those rare books that was so interesting that I couldn't put it down.

I read I am The Messenger in one hit,
and it is my favourite book.

I love the Book Thief as well.
I have the first edition hardcover that was released by the publishing house to book reviewers. It doesn't even have a cover on it, just maroon and black.
It's a gorgeous book, but set me back quite a bit :(
