Given how we've hijacked the other thread, thought it would be good to have a book thread. So...what are you currently reading?

I have just three books on the go at the moment:

The Rise of the Iron Moon by Stephen Hunt. I was bought this steam-punk trilogy for Christmas. Wasn't keen on the first one; the second one was much better written. The third has started quite well so we'll see how it goes.

The Confusion: The Baroque Cycle 2 by Neal Stephenson. I've had this for over a year. Loving the story but just can't read it in huge chunks, hence why it's taking so long to finish :(

The Templars: The Dramatic History of the Knights Templar, the Most Powerful Military Order of the Crusades by Piers Paul Read. Bought this because there are tonnes of references to the Knights Templar around where I live. I was also watching a program which theorised that Switzerland was actually formed by the Knights Templar thanks to it's banking history and flag. So far, this book has given me a massive history of religion (which I'm not keen on and have promptly forgotten) and has barely mentioned the Knights Templar :(

This year's New Years resolution is to stop reading so much junk and read more high-brow stuff - classics and non-fiction. So far not managing very well on this front ;)

I've just finished 'Winter in Madrid' by CJ Sansom - which made me cry.

A colleague at work has got me reading 'Twilight'. It's absolutely rubbish that you can read with your brain switched off, but it's relatively entertaining.

I've also got 'Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance' on the go, but I got stuck half way through a couple of months ago and can't bring myself to pick it up again.

Next on the list is 'Juliet, naked' by Nick Hornby - which I mainly picked up because the adverts on the tube in London a couple of months ago made me laugh! Plus Nick Hornby is usually good value.

I've just finished my second read of Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. I love this mans work, he's easily my joint favourite author alongside Jane Austen.

I love reading :D I read all the time - in bed, in the bath, cleaning my teeth, eating breakfast - you get the point :D There is never a point where I don't have a book on the go.
At the moment I'm reading The Snow Empress by Laura Joh Rowland. I'm not very impressed so far.
Before that I read Handle With Care by Jodie Picoult, who is one of my favorite authors.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind

I've not read that, but I saw the film a couple of years ago. It was... intriguing! Especially the end -I don't think I've ever seen such an odd ending :hehe: Ever since then, I've wanted to read the book, but never gotten around to it. Do you recommend it?

Vulcan 607 - its about the Vulcan Bombing raid during the Falklands war, its no so much a war story its more about how they get a ageing Cold war Bomber on a 8000 mile return trip to do this mission.

I have not read the book but my old boss was part of the operation and he always banged on about it, not sure if it was luck or military precision lol

I've finally found my copy of Empire of the Sun so I'm starting that right now :D

How do so many of you manage to read more than one book at a time? If I don't completely concentrate on one book then it seems to lose it's impact with me, I follow the plot but I don't get as absorbed in what's going on. I can just about manage a fiction and non-fiction book on the go but I completely lose it with two fiction books at once. :(

I think it depends on the type of book. I read a LOT of trash so you don't have to concentrate very hard - and even if you forget what's happening, you tend to pick up the story pretty quickly. Also, I tend to read a mix of books - say one action, one crime, one fantasy, one non-fiction - so it's easy not to get them mixed up. I think that's why I haven't read many of the classics - they take far more concentration that most of the pap I tend to read!

The problem with reading so much crap is that you forget what you have and haven't read - I now put all my books up on GoodReads so that I remember what I've read. In just under two years, I've read 177 books, most of which have been truly terrible :boxedin:
