There are many health reasons to not eat pork. I generally keep my intake of red meat (such as beef) low anyway.

Got any good links on this? I don't eat a lot of meat but of the meat I do eat, most of it is pork so would be curious to read more?

I'm mostly concerned with the saturated fat, cholesterol, etc. Apparently even lean pork contains a lot of fat as it is stored inside muscle cells rather than in fat cells (that one could trim away).
I don't even want to think about all the growth hormones, antibiotics, etc., that pigs are given and then leave residual traces in the pork meat.
You'd be better off switching to venison, rabbit, etc.

OK thanks. I sort of knew that anyway. It doesn't help that my favourite cooked pork is crispy pork which, barring pork scratchings, is possibly the most unhealthy way to eat it thanks to the salt & fat content. I figure in small amounts it's probably not so bad for me - I was a veggie for quite a while so I'm not fussed if I don't eat meat for long periods of time.

In terms of meat, a lot of it is filled with crap anyway, particularly at the cheaper end of the market. So it's not just pork. There was a really good article in The Grocer a while back (not that I can find it now) about the stuff they put into chicken breasts to plump them out. It was really :vomit: I also watched a program where they were talking about food fraud and one company claimed that they could mask the genetics (?) of waste pork and beef and so they could insert them into chicken as a bulker without being caught (as most meat has to pass stringent tests). So I guess the moral of the story is the same still: eat 'rarer' meats and void the cheap stuff and you are less likely to be eating lots of random other junk.

I'm guessing you probably know an awful lot more than I do about this sort of thing though :)

It's like with beer, wine and chocolate: Life is too short to eat bad meat

A few weeks back I was at the grocer and baught a package of thinly sliced beef loin cuts and a package of thinly sliced pork loin cuts. I was surprised to read that the pork was lower in cholesterol than the beef and it also had a higher protein rating, according to the label that is.

I do not eat alot of either one sadly :D but I do balance out my diet daily with alot of fresh fruits and veggies aswell as protein drinks. Life is just too short not to beat your meat er sorry I meant eat your meat :hehe: .

Yeah, it is quite surprising, isn't it? Meat done on a George Foreman grill thing is rather good because so much of the fat is removed, though. Just wish I actually had one of my own :P

Most of the meat I eat tends to be poultry these days, or lamb. The fattier something is, the less I want to eat it. Lately I've been eating a lot of vegetable-based dishes, because there was no room in the freezer for any meat and we haven't been sitting down to eat as a family thanks to busy schedules. It's something I could probably manage to do more often if I felt like it, but I don't feel like it. :P

Having read about this particular experience, though, I am now quite eager to try eating Skippy.

PHILADELPHIA IS AMAZING.
Sorry for the caps. But seriously.
And adding on to the meat topic, I'm not really a fan (but I still eat it occasionally).
