Press the 'Windows' (>.<) key on your keyboard along with the R key and when the box pops up, type 'cmd' and hit enter. Then when the black box pops up, type 'chkdsk' and hit enter.

Just did that and recieved this message:

'Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in 'read-only' mode' ?

It should give you an option to run "Chkdsk on on a next start-up" then you just reboot and let windows do its thing! In Windows it runs in READ ONLY mode because the disk is being used by the OS hence can't rearrange data and mark bad sectors.

http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=5097 <-- some help on running chkdsk from your Windows install CD if you have one.

I did not recieve the "Chkdsk on on a next start-up" when I just restarted my computer? I do have my 'reinstillation CD for Windows XP Home Edition' and thanks for the link aswell. Do I need to remove Windows XP from my computer before doing the reinstall?? Also when I 'restart' to do the reinstall do I use the F8 tab for the reboot process??

Sorry for all the questions but I'm not a 'puter person so I need all the help I can get.

Thanks,
tex

First question is; Do you have a copy of Windows XP or a restore disk? if it's the later it will wipe your hard disk and reset to factory defaults which won't solve the problem, it'll only mean that you'll need to restore your data and the problem will remain. Try the following before we mess with Windows discs, this should enable check on reboot and initiate the chkdsk /f command.

Step 1: Be aware that it is no longer necessary to run Chkdsk F from the DOS command line. You can still do it this way if you'd like (open the DOS command line and type "chkdsk /f"), but Chkdsk is now integrated into Windows itself.

Step 2: Run Windows XP normally, allowing it to load fully.

Step 3: Access the "My Computer" menu. You can do this by clicking the Start menu and clicking the "My Computer" menu option. You can also double-click the "My Computer" icon if you've enabled it on your desktop.

Step 4: Right-click on the drive on which you wish to run the Chkdsk F command.

Step 5: Click "Properties" in the right-click context menu.

Step 6: Click on the "Tools" tab in the Properties window.

Step 7: Click on the "Check Now" button in the "Error-checking" frame of the Tools tab.

Step 8: Click in the "Automatically fix file system errors" check box under the "Check disk options" frame in the following window. This is the step which enables the "/f" command in Chkdsk.

Step 9: Click "Start" to begin the Chkdsk scan. If there are a lot of processes running in the background, or if Chkdsk determines that it should be run when you next restart your computer, it will suggest it. It is always advisable to run the Chkdsk from the restart in this case.

Step 10: Set your system to safe mode with the "/SAFEBOOT" command from the MSCONFIG program. Click "Start" and "Run." Type "MSCONFIG" and enable the "/SAFEBOOT" option from the BOOT.INI tab if your anti-virus or anti-spyware software is conflicting with the Chkdsk process.

Hopefully this will solve your problem; but beware it will take some time to complete the chkdsk, maybe a couple of hours!

I finally figured out how to perform your earlier chkdsk suggestion and was expecting it to run for a few hours but it finished in like 2min's with no errors found I believe. Anyway as I mentioned before the issue I was having has not appeared in the last two days.

The disc I used was the first one in this pic yet I have this other one, pic #2, should I try that 2nd disc aswell or do you think I should try your latest suggestion???

I would try the suggestion above first to see if there are errors as I find it hard to believe that suddenly there are no errors after initially saying there were errors.

The discs you have pictures look suspiciously like restore discs to reset to factory defaults including all the crap software that came pre-installed on the computer.

The second disk is simply a newer version of Windows XP factory default restore disc, it includes SP2 whereas the first includes SP1a.

I performed your latest suggestion with 100% satisfaction, my 'puter is working better than ever which leaves me VERY SUSPICIOUS:P !!

I'm happy that you're happy, which is just as well as I start a new tech support job on Tuesday!

Post update: My original 80GB hard drive officially took a crap last weekend so I replaced it with an inexpensive but good Western Digital 160GB. After the initial setup process I immediately installed my anti-virus protection and made a promise to myself so that this hard drive lives a long, happy and trouble free life, NO SHAGGING websites :hehe: . I also just recieved my wireless modem after waiting for an extra week due to the baffoons at AT&T so no more cable running across the hall from the computer room to the room with the phone jack. The installation instructions are alittle confusing so I must wait until 8am before I can get assistance setting it up.

Thanks once again for all the help I recieved  ,

Now I'm fawked once again :irked: . After getting tech support to install my wireless connection yesterday I had to go back to my normal modem setup so no big deal right, wrong! I now have some pop-up saying I have virus's and trojans, it's called "Additional Guard" while at the time I had my McAfee anti-virus installed:confused: .

I went for a different approach and removed McAfee hoping to reinstall it but now I cannot even do that??????? :irked::irked::banghead: . I'm on the verge of unloading a full clip from my .45cal on this daym computer, any suggestions, advice or help would be greatly appreciated???
