Can't wait for it in HD 3D, Sony are working with FIFA to show some of the world cup in 3D in 2010 so it's not out the question to think it's far off for F1.
Wow, how long is it going to take for people to realise 3D TV is as bad an idea as VR Video Games and/or Project Natal?
Care to elaborate?
Well there is this assumption that increased immersion is always superior. It's actually not true. It's a bit like the theory of the uncanny valley in designing CG faces or androids. The quality of the experience increases in line with the increase in immersion up to a certain point near total immersion/hyper-reality and then it drops off.
For example, look at Tony Hawk: RIDE. Once you go too close to simulating reality exactly, but not completely, the little disparities become more frustrating. Another example is the critical flaw of VR & Project Natal, both of which ditch abstraction. Games which use abstraction allow us to do things which are impossible or very hard in real life, like beat Andy Murray in a tennis match without being a pro tennis player. Once you start replicating people's actions exactly, that goes away again. You become a mere mortal, flawed and inept (Because you're NOT a pro tennis player or whatever). This leads to frustration.
The principle applies to 3D in that once you have content which looks real enough to touch, even tiny imperfections in the signal or image quality will ruin the effect. You ever seen a digital signal breaking up? Imagine that happening to a stereoscopic image of an F1 race. It would be torture. And that's after you've contended with artifacting - sure, the BBC's F1 feed is unlikely to have that problem because the Beeb has tonnes of bandwidth, but other channels will likely have loads of horrible artifacts ruining the sense of reality.
Aside from that, if you can think of a single good reason to show a football match in 3D on a television, I'd like to hear it. I'd also be amazed if people were actually willing to wear polarising glasses on a regular basis - yes, I know not all 3D TVs require them, but cinema-quality 3D is as yet impossible without them.
