Raikkonen's WRC switch deal done

By Jonathan Noble and Gerhard Kuntschik Thursday, December 3rd 2009, 13:32 GMT

Kimi Raikkonen's switch to the World Rally Championship is expected to be confirmed in the next few hours, AUTOSPORT has learned.

The Finn has been considering his options in the wake of a failure to complete a deal with McLaren, which was his only realistic chance to remain in F1 next year after he agreed to end his Ferrari contract early.

He had been widely expected to make the move to the WRC, and sources have revealed that he has now completed a deal to compete with the Red Bull-backed Citroen junior team alongside Sebastien Ogier.

It is understood that Raikkonen will contest the entire WRC season apart from the New Zealand Rally, which his team is not competing in. He will also participate in the Arctic Rally.

Raikkonen has made no secret of the fact that he is looking at a return to F1 in 2011 - with speculation already suggesting he is high on Red Bull Racing's list to partner Sebastian Vettel.

The fact that Red Bull is backing Raikkonen's rally efforts will do little to quell those rumours, although sources at the energy drinks company are adamant that the current ties mean nothing for his future F1 ambitions.

"This has no prejudice at all for Kimi's further F1 career if he intends one," a source close to Red Bull told AUTOSPORT. "It does not mean at all that he will replace a current Red Bull F1 driver in our team from 2011."

Hi people, new to the board, but this is my opinion on Kimi

I've been a McLaren fan for a long time, and used to back Kimi, but when this all came out about "will only drive in a car capable of winning the championship", I lost all respect for him because it proved that he is only in it for himself, he's not interested in the team or the car, just his own results. I'm sure other drivers are guilty of this, but we are talking about Kimi here.

Enjoy your stay at WRC, and either come back with an attitude check, or don't come back at all.

I respect him more, after he said he only wants to be in a winning car.
Its shows he is dedicated and doesn't want to fanny about in midfield.
I guess the respect works both ways.

Indeed, each to their own. He's been world champion, and obviously doesn't want to be anything less then that again, but any driver cannot be successful without the full support of his team, and how is he going to get that support with that kind of attitude? There's nothing wrong with ambition, don't get me wrong, but Kimi has gone too far towards ignorance.

I disagree with you there, by saying it hes making it clear to any midfield teams not to approach him as his heart won't be in it, hes being frank and I have no moral objection to the sentiment hes expressing. If he only wants to win races I feel its his right to say and choose that, I don't believe such an approach is negative (ok, maybe if loads of drivers did it) particcualry for one who has won a world championship.

Thats fair enough, and I agree that he is being open and honest, which is commendable, I personally don't feel that having the attitude of "I'm in this for me, I don't care about anything else" is going to help him.

I don't think it'll make him liked by teams as well, they know that in a bad season or something they can't realy on kimi to give his heart, I think that was probably ferrari's main problem with him. They wanted a team leader (alonso) to replace shumacher.

so it is official. Kimi has signed for Citroen.... more importantly for 2011 it is the Red Bull Citroen team.

VERY good for WRC, we need more support. It is so highly skilled, I actually think it is probably more skilled than F1, driving on gravel on the edge of a cliff, then on tarmac and snow too... Someone like Raikkonen can bring so many supporters. Hopefully once they've seen what WRC is all about they'll carry on
