To be fair, Vatanen didn't deserve to win. His campaign was quite a shambles when compared to the opposition. Let's see how this goes, I guess.
Vatanen's campaign was doomed from the onset. FIA representatives campaigning for Todt
in their own time, allegations that some within the governing body were attempting to bribe the vote. However Vatanen rose to the bait, he could have played a far better strategy.
You have to remember that Crash-Gate was blown completely out of proportion in an attempt to draw attention away from Vatanen. I bet nobody knows much about the race-fix scandal which is rocking the FIA GT series at the moment? Exactly, because it was facilitated to remove Briatore and pour water on the presidential election campaign.
Although I feel the FIA botched up crash-gate, quite clearly shown by the fact that Briatore has been able to successfully organise an appeal due to the amount of potentially-unfair methods, that is another matter.
Although Mosley should have remained out of the race, he got involved in supporting Todt, but that wasn't to say that the actual process of election was corrupt.
Far too premature for those condemning Todt to start doing so. I must admit, I have my own personal thoughts on the appointment that aren't particularly favourable - mainly relating to the campaign itself rather than the actual appointment, however I'm more than willing to give him a fair crack of the whip before I make any full judgement. Only then would those personal opinions be validated.
Of course Todt did anything he could to help Ferrari win - when he was at Ferrari! He was employed at the team to help them win, and he was doing his job and doing it incredibly well whilst he was there. Now he is in a post where he is expected to be impartial and authoritative, who's to say he won't do equally as good a job!
In fact, some could say that his decisions could end up going the opposite way, as he'll know full well that people will be suspicious of the potential for bias, and he may seek to dispel any such rumours...
The only fact that we know is that he is now in the role, and that we have to wait and see when it comes to the crunch!
I would say to give Todt time. One thing he will do is allow for unity within the governing body. Although his proposals may be frowned upon, at least they will be listened to and there will be stability. If Vatanen was in I doubt he would have the same authority - what a huge pro-Mosley faction still in the FIA and the outgoing president himself sitting in the Senate.
I'm worried about the potential formation of Commisioners for each championship, I have also made this clear before. Especially with such names being thrown about.
As McLaren Fan posted in a previous thread, I have already spoken about this. The Mosley era lives on.
However I say give Todt a chance. If he brings the same sort of motivation to the FIA post as he did to Ferrari then he could really make things work. His campaign was based on teamwork and although the team may be bad, that is no surprise. Todt might prove us wrong, so I agree with you Zurich_allan.
