The world of Formula 1 has paid tribute to Brawn GP's Jenson Button as the Englishman won the 2009 world drivers' championship in Brazil.

:P Not to sound bitter or open up a debate, but what happened to him being British?:hehe:

He won the World Championship.

For example DC is Scottish because he never won the wdc but if he did he would of been British. :P

My point exactly.

To be honest, I use British and English interchangeably, although I know I shouldn't. If it's any consolation I'll happily claim DC as a brit.

Ah but what I mean is, Button is an Englishman but he is also a Brit. He races under a British superlicense etc etc. Typical press though. English winner, British Loser.
:hehe:

Sir Jackie said that at Silverstone during his autograph session. Told it how it was.

The press always do it but in reality most English people don't care if someone's Scottish, Welsh or English (they're still British) so i don't understand why the press have to make the distinction, especially when it clearly annoys the Welsh and the Scottish folks. They should use British if someone is participating under the Union Jack, win or lose.

Do you know what's weird... im closer to Belfast sometimes than I am to my capital city!

Why do you think I like being a Pirate? I like to travel the irish sea and all that.

Anyways, yes I think Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland should form a Union within the United Kingdom... The United Minorities of the GBR :hehe:

Congrats, Jenson. It was a great performance in Brazil from you. :)

(Though I can't help thinking that it was written in the stars for Jenson to win the title - he got quite a few lucky breaks in the second half of the season when he wasn't performing).

May have been but these stats show a great deal of consistancy compared to Rubens and Vettel:

Jenson Button
Wins: 6
2nd places: 1
3rd places: 1
Total podiums: 8
Points Scoring Positions: 7
Total point scoring races: 15

Rubens Barrichello
Wins: 2
2nd places: 3
3rd Places: 1
Total podiums: 6
Points scoring positions: 8
Total Points scoring races: 14

Sebastian Vettel
Wins: 3
2nd places: 2
3rd places: 2
Total Podiums: 7
Points Scoring Positions 4
Total Points scoring races 11

Button scored more podium places then either of his closes rivals, more wins than both combined and finished in the points more times than either of them. Consistancy was Buttons biggest weapon and he used it to its fullest effect

Some mechanical failures marred SV's season...

Not to mention a terrible luck imbalance in JB's favour. Still, he deserves his championship, even if I was mighty bored of his tooling around in the mid-field.

The only people that I know of who use 'British' and 'English' interchangeably are those not from the United Kingdom. And, yes, please do not forget Northern Ireland.

On the face of things, Scheckter and Rosberg look worse champions than Button, but that is not the case. Scheckter drove well in 1979, and when he did not have the car to win Grands Prix, he was able to keep gathering up the points. 1982 was a funny season, as poor reliability, Villeneuve's death and various other things were factors. And, again, when Rosberg was not able to win races, he did the best he could under the circumtances. Further, both drivers were races, even if they were not quite as gifted as somebody like Senna. Button has not been affected with poor reliability, his car has not been a mobile chicane for all of the season, and his opposition has been poor.
