The thing is, from what ive read it sounds like its all Symonds and Piquet! They are the masterminds behind it all so where does Flav fit in? and why considering the two whose idea it was, one is free to race on, the other 5 year ban yet Flavio is the one banned for life? Doesnt add up....

And to add to it, Flavio is suing. On top of that, I was thinking his reactions on the pit wall indicated that he knew nothing.

I don't know how I'm s'posed to feel.

Bud, you have nailed my curiosity as well. Let me know if we figure this one out because something is odd....

My thoughts exactly. I suppose it's possible that Flavio was the one to suggest the plan to Piquet and in turn Piquet brings it up with Symonds but we've got no evidence for that. From what I've read there doesn't seem to be any definitive evidence against Briatore. Although I'd probably be saying the same about Symonds had he not confessed and put his foot in it during that leaked interview (what other evidence points directly at him?).

“f***ing hell. My every f***ing disgrace. f***ing.... He’s not a driver.”

That reaction is a bit odd to say the least. Presumebly his reaction is a criticism of any driver that would willingly crash which is something most drivers would never consider, rather than shock that his driver has made yet another mistake. Maybe Briatore is an Oscar worthy actor? It still seems odd to me.

If Symonds didn't take immunity so that the FIA couldn't single out Flavio, then surely that strategy didn't work. As they got at Flavio anyhow.

It would be very interesting if Flavio sued. I've often thought there must be some laws that should restrict the seemingly (as far as I can see) unlimited powers of the FIA to do whatever they damn well want for the most venal reasons and with the most illogical reasons. That I remember, we've only seen Minardi getting an injunction allowing them to race in Australia once. The FIA then, in my eyes, attempted to bully a country's whole legal system, threatening to take away the Australian GP. Looking at how the FIA, and Bernie, operate, I feel there must be something akin to abuse of a dominant position. I think it would be very interesting if people who have nothing to lose, from a F1 perspective, then engage legal processes.

Apparently there's a super-secret mystery Witness X who says they were there at the meeting and that Briatore knew of the whole thing.

I'm not the only one who feels there is something fishy there, am I?

Why would the identity of this witness be protected? Why wouldn't Flavio (at least) spill the beans on who this person is?

Personally I wouldn't be surprised if there is the occasional incidence of teams bugging competitors, or the FIA bugging teams. Could it be that the "witness X" is actually illicitly obtained evidence?

It's possible, although everything seems to point to it being an individual so far.

Even so, it would take more than Briatore knowing of the whole thing for him to be guilty. It could be that Briatore said no, don't do it. Or that he just didn't take the suggestion seriously. Either are plausible (I'm not saying probable) given Flavio's reactions. E.g. "he's not a f******g driver". For Flavio to be guilty, he'd at least have to have known of the plan, known that it was going into effect, and supported or at least implicitly allowed the plan. For all we know, Flavio might have said something like "don't be ******* silly" and ignored the suggestion after that, only to see it come to fruition.

If it is an individual, could it be Nelson Piquet senior?

Apparently not.

A Renault employee, codenamed Witness X, has emerged as a key whistleblower in Formula 1's race-fixing scandal.

The FIA says in a report on its website that Witness X had told their investigators he had been "personally present at a meeting shortly after qualifying on Saturday 27 September 2008 when Mr Symonds had mentioned the possibility of a crash plan to Mr Briatore".

The report continued: "The FIA's advisers were confident Witness X himself played no active role in the conspiracy and that, indeed, he had objected to it and sought to distance himself from it."

The only other person mentioned was an assistant of Briatore who had summoned Piquet to the meeting, however the statement from Piquet doesn't say whether or not this assistant was actually in the meeting. That said, there was nothing to stop him listening at the door...
