- 14 Sep 09, 19:26#152798I think it is crazy to suggest that Hamilton was ever going to get close enough to make a move on Button. By the time they were reaching the Lesmos he was no where near close enough to make a move into Ascari - his final chance.
Looking at the timing information from the race, Hamilton was not significantly faster than Button in the final sector, therefore Hamilton was never in a million years going to catch and pass Button, unless the Brawn driver made a mistake.
I applaud Hamilton for keeping the pressure up on Button, but he was really clutching at straws. There shouldn't be an argument over whether or not he should have settled for third. He had nothing to lose, and had every right to go for it.
Hamilton lost the race through the pit sequence and, quite clearly, because Brawn had a superior package.
I find it funny that people also seem confident that Lewis would have been able to pull off some blind move on Button. Again he was not close enough, and the remainder of the circuit did not contain any heavy braking areas. The McLaren would be low on its KERS by the end of the lap, so there was no chance of him slip streaming Button, also people forget to take the dirty-air effect into account.
Sure Hamilton might have took a risk and stabbed one up the inside of Button at the Parabolica, but I am of the opinion that he would never have been close enough - given Button made no mistakes.
Therefore Hamilton had every right to push, but only as a means to force Button into a mistake. No other solution would have allowed him into second.
Lewis does not walk on water, he may be a very talented driver, but as much as some fangirls/boys would have you believe he isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread and does make mistakes. His crash, although inflicted through his own bravery, was a clear indication of that.
