To Survive the Surtees Crash you would need the helments do have some outer shell that could disapate energy some how.

if they do not want a vistor/windshield, how about a slit like a tank. but then I am sure people will complain it would not look very good

If Massa's accident would of happened five years ago he probly wouldn't be alive now.There will be more advances over time and things will improve even further for driver safety.
