Who's Tilke and why does he have such a bad name? Which circuits did he make a mess of?

He's responsible for Sepang, Sakhir, Istanbul Park, Marina Bay (Singapore), Valencia Street Circuit, and Yas Island. He is also responsible for the changes made to Hockenheim and Fuji Speedway, and has designed the new parts of Donington.

Herman Tilke is the favourite circuit architect of the powers that be in F1. He designed Shanghai, Sakir, Sepang, Istanbul, Marina Bay, Valencia Harbour, Yas Island as well as ruining (*only slightly)(**temporarily) Österreichring, Hockenheim, Fuji, Monza*, Monaco*, Hungaroring*, Catalunya*, Spa** and improving Magny Cours

That's a lot of circuits for one man, I can't really remember Istanbul but Valencia was neither one thing or another. How did he ruin the others? Were these safety modificatins I'm guessing?

Istanbul has one good corner and no atmosphere, personally I prefer Valencia, turn 8 could easily be replicated somewhere more interesting.

Ostereichring was ruined because it was too dangerous, Hockenheim was ruined because...well I have no idea, it was supposed to improve overtaking but the old circuit was fine for that.
Fuji, because it was massively unsuitable for F1 in terms of safety and overtaking opportunities, Toyota basically promised to invest a crap load in facilities and got the tender fro the race. Tilke was then charged with 'fixing' the track.
Monza's first chicane was made more awkward by Tilke to slow the cars down and probably out of spite
One of two interesting corners was eliminated at Hungary, to try and improve overtaking, without success.
Same story at Catalunya.
Spa had it's bus stop chicane re profiled but it was changed again later. This was to improve overtaking and then to accommodate new pit facilities.
Tilke also moved the barriers back at Monaco and removed some bumps, in the interests of safety

It's disappointing to hear of so many circuits that used to be much more challenging and interesting but that were modified in the interests of safety. Improve the cars and the helmets but accept that F1 will always be dangerous.

There's no point in it being dangerous and boring.

Not to be funny, but as much as the guys like to show off their F1 knowledge, there is such a thing as Wikipedia which is ideal as a first port of call for questions such as this... :)

The cars are so safe these day, there's no real urgent need to go round ruining decent corners especially when we still go to Monaco. It's another symptom of the FIA's failure to effectively prioritise Safety, The environment, Cost cutting or Entertainment as it's main agenda and that is why it has failed in recent years to make real improvements in any of these areas

Wikipedia is also written by people who like to show off their knowledge. At least here if someone's wrong they're likely to get corrected.

Istanbul's layout is ok, but the track looks horribly dull and ordinary scenery wise. Out of Tilke's tracks Malaysia is probably the best one because it's quite fun to drive (on rFactor), has a nice sweeping flow to it and you do get some good racing going this year - especially before Bernie ruined it.
