How ridiculous would the start be if you wacked a barrier there?

I think its more of a case of the drivers would approach it different,hense any street circuit.

Its not a bad idea to have a run off area at the first corner,if it wasnt for KERS it probly wouldn't of even been mentioned.

I'm not keen on the gravel I don't want to see someone out of a race from getting stuck in it and I think it's more likely something could dig in and flip the car. Maybe some sort of pair of bumps forming a chicane at the exit of the run off.

But if you were to hit those bumps at a high speed you could easily get propelled back onto the racetrack and into the oncoming traffic? I'm thinking Glock in Australia. Ok he didn't hit a man-made bump, but he hit something like that.

I think drivers should be punished for silly mistakes (and I don't mean by the stewards). It frustrates me that they can get away with trying a ridiculously impossible dive (Fuji 2008) reasonably easily.

I definitely prefer tarmac as runoff vs. gravel or other stuff. We've discussed that in the past. It helps motivate the drivers to take a risk, to try to overtake (don't we all want that?) rather than stay conservative out of fear the slightest mistake would end the race for them.

that was on grass though, if it was tarmac before the bump he'd probably been able to slow down more than he did

If your tires spin like crazy due to the dirt there, a KERS boost would make things only worse. No, he just managed to get a smooth agricultural excursion with a sensitive foot and probably later on pushed the KERS button.

maybe they figure it was a longer route on the outside than being on the track which would mean there's no advantage? the only advantage is not getting caught up in the crowd. otherwise maybe he should have been penalized, unless they consider that area fair track.

he prob only pressed the KERS button on the way down the hill and on the straight after it.

you wouldn't press it on thr dusty runnoff even if you had traction at the time pressing kers would just spin up the wheels.

Which is one hell of a big advantage considering theres 19 other cars trying to navigate the same corner at the same time
