Renault absolutely should have been punished for their antics in the pits today - especially in light of the last week or so - but banning the team is going a bit far. A heavy fine and a penalty on the grid would have been the better way to go.

I agree, what happened today was dangerous but a full race ban may be a little extreme. However, given recent events, I can understand why they're punishment is so severe.

Then, why they don't punished Brawn?. This is just ridiculous.

Since it was obvious that renault could have easily corrected theirs, it was human error. Brawns was more an unexpected event. The cars were checked afterwards and declared safe - anyway they may still be punished its still being investigated but not as obvious as what went wrong compared to the renault incident.

Exactly what I was going to say. It was clear to everyone that Alonso's tyre was going to come off, I assume the stewards believe he should have been told to pull over. With Barrichello it was unexpected and somewhat unprecedented.

Alonso move to Ferrari anyone, now that Massa will surely be out for the season!

it would be amusing if Renault sacked Piquet then Alonso made a mid season switch to Ferrari leaving Renault driverless

its official
Renault will miss the next round of the championship for allowing Fernando Alonso to leave the pits with a wheel not properly secured during Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix.

A mistake attaching the front-right wheel at Alonso's first stop led to it coming loose from the car once the Spaniard had returned the track. He limped back to the pits but was subsequently forced to retire due to resulting damage.

Budapest stewards decided Renault had been negligent in failing to secure the wheel, in knowingly letting Alonso leave the pits with the problem, and in failing to inform their driver of the issue.

Renault are to appeal the decision. Should that appeal fail it means Alonso and team mate Nelson Piquet will not participate in the European Grand Prix on August 21-23.

Official: Renault suspended from European GP
26/07/2009
Following their investigation into the incident which saw a wheel come off Fernando Alonso's car shortly after his first pit stop today, the Race Stewards in Hungary have suspended Renault from the next round of the World Championship.

Having viewed the available film recordings and radio recordings, and having met the Renault team manager twice the stewards ruled that:

1: The competitor knowingly released Alonso without one of the retaining devices for the wheel-nuts being securely in position, this being an indication that the wheel itself may not have been properly secured.

2: Being aware of this failed to take any action to prevent the car from leaving the pitlane.

3: Failed to inform Alonso of this problem or to advise him to take appropriate action given the circumstances, even though the driver contacted the team by radio believing he had a puncture.

4: This resulted in a heavy car part detaching at Turn 5 and the wheel itself detaching at Turn 9.

Having breached Article 23.1.i and Article 3.2 of the 2009 FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations, the stewards ruled that the ING Renault F1 Team is suspended from the next event, the European Grand Prix in Valencia.

Although the penalty might appear harsh, it must be remembered that following recent incidents which saw Henry Surtees killed and Felipe Massa incur a fracture to his skull, motor sport is in the spotlight, especially when it comes to components falling from cars.

Pretty much what I thought.

The more i think about it the more justified it all becomes, but i still feel that yes they should be punished but to completely ban them from a GP? i think its still a little too far. i wouldnt be surprised if it gets over turned on Renaults almost certain appeal, but it sends a strong and clear message
