Renault banned from European Grand Prix following Alonso’s wheel loss
26 July 2009 by Keith Collantine
Renault are to be suspended from the next round of the world championship - the Eruopean Grand Prix at Valencia - following the wheel loss suffered by Fernando Alonso in today’s race.

Autosport’s Jonathan Noble reported on Twitter:

Renault has been suspended from the European Grand Prix for the wheel loss suffered by Fernando Alonso

This means Fernando Alonso will not be able to drive for Renault in his home Grand Prix.

He may be able to drive for another team and, contracts permitting, it is conceivable Ferrari could bring him in to replace the injured Felipe Massa.

Alonso lost his front-right wheel following a pit stop on lap 11 of the Hungarian Grand Prix. The wheel was not properly secured after the stop and it came loose shortly after the wheel fairing had come off the car.

This is the first time a team has been banned from a race as punishment for a car shedding a wheel. It seems the FIA are clamping down on the teams taking such risks after the accident that claimed Henry Surtees’ life last week, and Massa’s serious crash in qualifying yesterday.

Following the Australian Grand Prix Red Bull were fined $50,000 after allowing Sebastian Vettel to drive along the track following a crash which had torn a wheel off his car.

Renault suspended from European GP

By Jonathan Noble Sunday, July 26th 2009, 16:39 GMT

Renault has been suspended from the European Grand Prix for the events that led to a wheel coming off Fernando Alonso's car in Hungary today.

Following a post-race discussion with the stewards, it was deemed that the team had breached the regulations enough for it to be suspended from the next event.

It means Alonso will miss his home event that takes place in Valencia next month, unless he moves to another team.

Alonso had been leading the race up until his stop, but his efforts came to nothing after his right front wheel was not fitted properly. It worked its way loose and flew off the car later that lap, ending up against the crash barriers.

A statement issued by the stewards on Sunday night said that there had been multiple breaches of the regulations by the Renault team.

Stewards talked to Renault representatives twice after the race.

The statement said that Renault "knowingly released car no. 7 from the pitstop position without one of the retaining devices for the wheel-nuts being securely in position, this being an indication that the wheel itself may not have been properly secured."

It added that Renault, "being aware of this, failed to take any action to prevent the car from leaving the pitlane....failed to inform the driver of this problem or to advise him to take appropriate action given the circumstances, even though the driver contacted the team by radio believing he had a puncture."

It said that the team's actions had compromised safety in breach of Article 3.2 of the Sporting Regulations, and in breach of Article 23.1.i had released the car from the pits before it was safe to do so.

Renault has been reminded of its right to appeal the decision.

Overreaction much?lol they ban Renault but not brawn - although to be fair brawn wasn't at fault and punishing them would have led to an admission that banning testing wasn't just stupid it was dangerous

Agree about the banning of testing. Its dangerous. We had a new kid racing this week who wasnt allowed to test!! And new parts can only be tested at a race weekend. Yesmotorsport is dangerous but banning testing makes it unneccesarily so.

Unless he moves to another team............FERRARI! :

yes, i wonder if that would hav happened if he drove for any of the other teams?

I think the team should have been telling Fernando to park it before the wheel came loose and dangerously fly off! After what happened to Surtees i think they have made an example of Renault here.

It was very dangerous when it flew off, just made me think of poor Henry last week

Renault absolutely should have been punished for their antics in the pits today - especially in light of the last week or so - but banning the team is going a bit far. A heavy fine and a penalty on the grid would have been the better way to go.

WHAT :bs:

Honestly, they punished the team as if they had done this purpose. As if they knew the wheel was going to come flying off. I mean come on, use some common sense here. It was an accident. If Renault could have done anything to prevent it, they would have.

What exactly are Renault being punished for. Human error ??

I agree, what happened today was dangerous but a full race ban may be a little extreme. However, given recent events, I can understand why they're punishment is so severe.
