I dont like it how people say Alonso got beaten by Hammy.
Erm, same amount of points, same amount of wins, same championship position.

Actually after wins it goes down to number of 2nd places then 3rd places. Lewis got 5 2nd places Alonso got 4 so technically Hamilton finishes ahead of Alonso and therefore beats him.

I never said that; I made comment to Alonso's conduct while at McLaren... nothing to do with driver skill... no one can say that Alonso isn't a great driver but I would say that he is no better than Hamilton and likewise Hamilton is no better than Alonso! Drivers are judged as much by their conduct as their driving ability, hence why Hamilton got slammed for cheating in Australia and rightly so!

I know you didn't say that.
I just wanted to post something.

Yeah but hardly.
No one cares about 2nd places.

Unfortunately with the current points system, a second place finish is almost as good as a win with only two points difference between a win and finishing second. I wish that the FIA would adopt FOTA's suggestion of a bigger points spread to give drivers the incentive to go for the win; two extra points isn't much of an incentive in the scope of winning the world championship so drivers would be willing to accept second instead of risking taking the win, losing two points versus losing 10 points!

Thanks for that.

Renault to retain Piquet for Hungary

By Matt Beer Friday, July 17th 2009, 09:05 GMT

Renault has confirmed that Nelson Piquet will remain with the team for the Hungarian Grand Prix, after renewed speculation about his future surfaced during the Nurburgring weekend.

Piquet has yet to score this season, and has only outqualified his team-mate Fernando Alonso once in two and a half seasons. AUTOSPORT understands that a performance clause in the Brazilian's contract could have allowed Renault to drop him after the German race, and team boss Flavio Briatore initially refused to confirm that he would be kept on.

But Renault has now entered Piquet for the Hungaroring as usual, and he is optimistic that he will be much stronger next weekend as from Hungary his car will also receive the upgrades that Alonso used in Germany. It is believed that his contract stipulates equal equipment to his team-mate, so he is being given a further opportunity to show what he is capable of.

"I pushed hard, but my car didn't have the new updates that Fernando had and it was difficult to make much progress or match Fernando's pace," Piquet said of his Nurburgring race, which saw him fall from 10th on the grid to finish 13th.

"I should have the same upgrades as Fernando in Hungary and I think I can be more competitive. As always I will be aiming to qualify in the top ten and hopefully score some points in the race."

Piquet reckons his previous strong form at the Hungaroring will also help him achieve a better result next weekend.

"I enjoyed Hungary last year and it was probably one of my best races as I finished sixth," he said. "It's also a circuit where I won in GP2."

Past and former Renault test drivers Romain Grosjean and Lucas di Grassi, both currently competing in GP2, had been touted as the potential replacements if Renault had decided to part company with Piquet.

Hmm. Piquet didn't do too badly in Hungary last season. He was faster than Alonso in two of the three practice sessions (though was beaten in all three qualifying sessions, even taking fuel levels into consideration) and set a faster lap in the race. Alonso still finished the race in a higher position, though.

Alonso to still beat him. New parts or not.

Either way if Piquet is on form and he can also fight for points, Renault may be in for some points.

Renault today confirmed that Nelson Piquet will contest the Hungarian Grand Prix next weekend.

It had been strongly rumoured that the Brazilian would lose his seat due to a relative lack of performance, with Swiss-French GP2 driver Romain Grosjean waiting in the wings.

But in a team preview distributed by the Enstone-based squad on Friday morning, Piquet was quoted as saying 'points must be the target in Hungary'.

In the subsequent team interview, the 23-year-old explained his difficult Nurburgring race as down to not having the same updates as enjoyed by team-mate Fernando Alonso.

"I should have the same upgrades as Fernando in Hungary and I think I can be more competitive," Piquet added.
