But wait, arent they obligated to contest the 2010 championship? if all the FOTA teams are in danger of legal action then surely if you decide to leave F1 then you too are in breach of contract? so if Bernies threat to all the FOTA teams is real then surely if Renault leave and the others do stay then they should be challenged legally right?

In that case; surely Honda should have been sued as they signed a contract to keep them in the sport until 2012 just like the other nine teams! I believe they can leave as long as they don't race in another series as the other teams are presumed to be doing should they actually walk away from Formula 1.

I think this has been misread. They are only stirring up their battle with the FIA. I doubt Renault are going to pull out for the next few years... or well I hope not...

I seriously doubt Renault will pull out of F1 altogether. I would be fairly confident that they don't pull out at all but if they did the worst case scenario is that Flavio will buy the team and Renault will continue to supply engines.

I have heard talk from the SPEED F1 team that it is possible that Flavio MIGHT buy the team?

The BBC presenters questioned Flavio on that very thing. Flavio quickly said something along the lines of, he won't need to buy the team because Renault will still be here. But theres no doubt the day Renault drop out, Briatore will be the man who buys the team, just as Brawn did.

Renault/Nissan CEO just made a statement in the press that sorta hints that he is for a breakaway more than leaving F1.

Another point of view is that the parent companies of the manufacturer based teams want to distance themselves from the off track politics so are withdrawing because they don't want to be associated with Courtroom F1; and constraint feuds between the FIA and FOTA detracting from the racing!

One question though, would the drivers contracts still be valid and would Flavio still be the boss? As i see that Renault plays a 2 parter in this game and is Flavio both the parts and is the drivers both the parts too?

I think drivers are usually contracted to the team, but they could probably ask for a special clause which states the team must be in Formula One, etc. I know Hamilton is contracted to McLaren with no such clause; so, if McLaren decided to quit Formula One and race go-karts next season, Hamilton would have to go with the team.
