F1 car crashed at Renault road show
09 April 2009
Renault's road show of Dubai has seen its first day of demonstrations cut short after a crash for its Formula One car. The car, driven by UAE automobile club President - also the FIA's vice President for sport - Mohammed bin Sulayem, went out of control during a high-speed drag race against a Ford GT.
Bin Sulayem, invited by Renault to drive the car for the show which is scheduled to last until Sunday, was in a head-to-head challenge against Renault F1 test driver Romain Grojean, driving a Ford GT, when the R28 Formula 1 car of 2008 spun at the Dubai Autodrome as a result of wheelspin from a standing start. After hitting a concrete wall, the 14-time Middle East rally champion was taken to the medical centre, although a number of minutes were required for the driver to be extracted from the car.
"Fortunately he was uninjured and the car will be taken back to be repaired," a Renault spokesperson told The National. Thankfully for the French manufacturer, a second car is present in Dubai although work will be required to fix a hydraulics problem. Despite almost being collected by the spinning F1 car, the Ford GT of Grojean escaped unharmed. The road show will continue on Friday, with race driver Nelsinho Piquet at the wheel of the R28.
