It is possible McLaren will be banned from a number of races should the World Motor Sport Council take a dim view of the 'lie-gate' scandal at the April 29th meeting.

Bernie Ecclestone told the Express newspaper that the serious charge of lying to stewards and bringing the sport into disrepute is worsened by McLaren's recent trouble over espionage.

"It is never good for anyone if you are back in court quickly for something similar," the F1 Chief Executive said.

The FIA body has essentially unlimited powers: from race bans, total exclusion from the championship, to draconian financial penalties, like the $100m fine levied against McLaren in 2007 for spying.

Ecclestone admitted that McLaren figures lying to the stewards to have Jarno Trulli penalised amounted to 'fraud'.

"There are many options open if the charge sticks and it would be a terrible thing if any team were banned from races. But it could happen," he said.

In 2005, BAR Honda was banned for two races for fielding a trick fuel tank.

Race bans would hurt McLaren more than a small to medium sized financial penalty. Not only will the team receive less income from the sponsors, they'll be seriously annoyed their brand is not being promoted.

And from a competition p.o.v it all but guarantees the end of their championship aspirations.

But it wouldn't erase them from the championship map completely, thus theoretically keeping them in the running, and Bernie wouldn't have to worry about the McLaren fans not buying tickets, etc...

Sounds like the fair punishment to me.

No the fair punishments are: Hamilton receives race ban(s) and Mclaren get some sort of minor fine but is still allowed to compete with 2 cars.

We can agree to disagree. :D

Are people this divided about other drivers or is there something about Lewis that everybody loves or hates? I see some people claiming that Ryan took the fall for Lewis but let's play a game of pretend. We are going to pretend that Ryan was struck dead by one of those lightning strikes, Trulli would have gone off course, Lewis would have moved into 3rd and called over the radio, but would have only heard static. Lewis would have stayed in 3rd and the race would have ended with LH in 3rd and YT in 4th. The media would have asked what happened and Lewis would have said exactly what he said. The stewards would have asked what happened and Lewis would have told the truth and secured his 3rd place-and all of us would be talking about the wonderful drive he made from the back of the pack up to 3rd. So, it looks to me like Ryan is the problem in this whole thing because without him, LH would have finished in 3rd.
