You are right,but other team principals like for example Ron Dennis hadn't noticed his talent.
It was a great coup by Briatore to bring him to Benetton.

Didnt he get the drive because (Gauchot?) was in prison for assault and couldnt race? And then he screwed up in the first race? Not sure if Im mixing things up.

No,you don't mix things up.
And yes,you are right,he actually screwed up before leaving the first corner.
But his lap times were amazing,especially in the qualification.

Yeah, it was Big Tom who started it all off as Schumi was driving in the World Sportscar Championship for him at that time, and Tom had taken over the management of Benetton halfway through 1991 and was preparing to give either Piquet and/or Moreno the boot. Moreno got the boot, Schumi made Piquet look like he was the rookie.
