An act of desperation, more than likely.
Firing Ryan was completely unnecessary, in my view. Suspending him pending McLaren's internal investigation and the FIA's kangaroo trial was more than adequate to deflect the blame from Hamilton and demonstrate the team were taking suitable action. Bearing this in mind, and that this kind of thing has gone on since day zero in Formula One, Whitmarsh's sacrifice of Ryan should be treated with nothing other than contempt and disgust.
