It is reported that Italian tyre manufacturer came close to a Formula 1 return. It is rumoured that Pirelli pulled out of the race with Bridgestone to be the sole supplier for the 2008-2010 seasons after the F1’s governing body refused to alter the technical rules. Instead, Pirelli are currently sole supplier to the World Rally Championship for 2007.
Pirelli CEO Francesco Gori has said that he met with FIA chiefs and proposed that Formula 1 tyres should be increased to at least 15 inches and that had the FIA gone with it’s original recommendation of 17 inch wheel diameter limits, Pirelli would have entered into Formula 1 immediately. Currently, Formula 1 tyres are just over 14 inches.
