The chances of staging a Grand Prix in South Korea received a timely boost on Tuesday, when race organisers confirmed that construction is on schedule to be completed by the end of summer.
The Korean International Circuit is scheduled to hold the country’s first Grand Prix on October 24, and despite rumours that the event would not be ready in time, it has been revealed that surfacing of the track will commence in July.
“We are extremely pleased with the progress of the circuit, facilities, and preparations for the Formula 1 Korean Grand Prix,” Yung Cho Chung, Chief Executive Officer of race organisers KAVO, is quoted as saying by Autosport.
“Construction is on schedule for completion this summer, and we have encountered no obstacles whatsoever, either logistical or political.
“The Government, at both the central and provincial level, is fully supportive of the project, and the entire country looks forward to welcoming Formula 1 to South Korea this autumn.”
Organisers also estimated that the 5.615km circuit, designed by Herman Tilke, currently sits at around 80% complete.
