Robert Kubica is in a stable condition following one of the most ferocious F1 crashes seen in recent years. The Polish driver crashed at over 180mph during a dramatic Canadian Grand Prix, breaking his leg and destroying his car.

After touching wheels with Jarno Trulli’s Toyota, Kubica ran wide onto the grass on the approach to the hairpin. Launching into the air, his BMW Sauber narrowly missed the parked Toro Rosso of Scott Speed, before hitting a concrete wall in the centre of the track, rolling once and slamming into the Armco on the far side of the track.

Fortunately, no other drivers were involved, and Kubica immediately showed signs of life following the accident. After around ten minutes he was extricated from the car while the remaining drivers circulated the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, restarting on lap 33.

Kubica was airlifted to Montreal’s General Hospital where an x-ray proved he had escaped the accident with just a broken leg. Lewis Hamilton, winner of the Grand Prix, was informed of the fate of his close friend as he crossed the line.
