Fernando Alonso has accepted the drive-through penalty which cost him precious points in the 2010 British Grand Prix.
The Ferrari driver was forced to take to the pit lane after race stewards judged that he had gained an unfair advantage, whilst attempting to overtake the Renault of Robert Kubica. Both drivers were side-by-side as they approached Club corner, only for Alonso to take to the grass and subsequently fail to give the place back.
Despite the penalty forcing him out of the points, the 28-year-old accepted the judgement.
“I accept everything they do. They are the judges,” Alonso told Spanish television after the race.
Although Alonso now finds himself 47 points behind Lewis Hamilton in the drivers’ standings, he is adamant that he still has a chance.
“This is just the halfway point of the season, so all the points that we have lost in this first half is because we haven’t done things as well as the others,” he said.
“So in the second half of the championship we are going to try to do better than the others and recover one point more than what they have now.
“The season is very long and we are not going to give up.”
Ferrari also accepted the penalty and said it hoped that it would set a precedent for future controversies.
“You can just say one thing: if a penalty must be punishing it must be always like this,” said the Italian team on its Twitter page.
